100 Gallon Cube Tank Build

Today I added more water to the sump and hooked up my auto top-off so when I go home for spring break on Friday the tank will be in good shape. I also cleaned up the silicon a little bit on the edges. I didn't do that when I first picked up the tank from Glass Cages so I decided that it was about time ;)

I have a tiny mantis (I think wenerrae) that I was going to give his own tank and plumb it into my system, but I put him in the sump for now and he seems happy there. He's got the whole 40 breeder to himself (other than the equipment and his dinner, aka hermits) loaded with rock and what does he choose as his lair? The space under the chemi pure bag! What a goofball.

After spring break I'm going to work on adding my sps back, hooking up my calcium reactor, and populating my tank with the rest of my fish on my list. The interruptus import will be in a little while, the guy in charge has some more pressing issues at the moment but hopefully relatively soon I'll have my dream fish in my tank :)

I got my IPSF pack today, it's acclimating as I'm typing. I can tell based on some of the contents that when I open the bags it'll smell wonderful ;)

My IPSF stuff is in my tank. Some of the stuff I was happy that I bought, other stuff I kind of thought was a waste of money after it was in my tank. Overall, I think it's a good option for someone that wants to budget it into their tank build, but honestly I think that getting some established live sand and some decent macro algae wouldn't be much different. Just my opinion, I know some reefers swear by this stuff.

I have been home in Farmington since Friday and I just got back. I was a little nervous about leaving the tank (as always) but overall everything isn't any worse for the wear. However, I did come home to a nice hair algae outbreak, which was fully expected as it's a new tank. As soon as I had unloaded my car I promptly went to the LFS, Noah's, and bought a few snails...3 smallish turbos (if there is such a thing) and 3 black "margarita" snails to add to my small cleanup crew (I just had a few snails, my two conchs, and the few snails that I got from IPSF). Friday I will be town and will be adding to my cleanup crew.

I have a few margaritas that are still hanging on after at least 5 years. However, most of the originals died after a few months. I think I had too many and not enough of the right algae to support them all.

Believe me, at this particular point in time I have plenty of all kinds of algae to support them ;)

how is tank doing and looking need some more progress pics, love the cube aquariums, plus can't wait to see how arrange your LR.

The tank looks a bit like a forest at this particular moment in time. I'm going through the standard new tank bryopsis/everything else algae outbreak but the turbo snails are starting to make a dent in it. I'll be in the area this evening and hopefully I'll pick up a tang to take care of some of the algae. As far as aquascaping goes, I got done with that a long time ago. Check back a few pages for pics :) I may or may not bring some of my hardier sps back from Chad's tonight, I'll have to see how they're doing.

Like a planted freshwater tank.

almost past that point myself, tore down 125 gallon to add new stand and sump and still had algae outbreak. Added 16 mexican turbos, 6 of those huge black and white striped turbos, few more hermit crabs, banded trochus, stomatellas breeding like crazy, now thanks to breutus got a small population of collinista snails going like i wanted. Haven't seen to often but had small keyhole limpets breeding but have slowed down cause haven't seen many. My new addition has helped out i recently added a foxface. reduced lights drastically since my metal halides need changed and that i've noticed in last week really helped out but i got some new phoenix bulbs coming today :D .

Good luck with algae its a real headeache.

When I was in St Charles today I snapped a few pics of two coral that I like quite a bit. The first is the sanddollar monti, and I will be the first to say that this coral is the hardest to photograph EVER! It's baby blue/purple with neon pink polyps. This shot was taken just after the tank was reaquascaped so the polyp extension sucks:

This one I bought in Tennessee when I went to pick up my tank from GC. It's a cool monti cap that a local had for sale. I'm going to call it the mint chocolate chip monti and then sell for a million bucks ;)

I brought home some of my hardier/less expensive/easier to find sps tonight. Over the next few weeks I hope to eventually have everything here. The first "victims" include a few montis (mintcc included) and a few millis. Once they're in their permanent locations I will take pictures, but right now they're on the bottom of my tank transitioning to the brighter light...they were on the bottom of Chad's tank.

Just a minor update...today I noticed my first specks of coralline algae! I gawk at my tank multiple times a day and I'm fairly confident that this was a relatively overnight development :) Yay for coralline!

I'm a bit overdue for an update...

I have added two new fish to my tank, a nice healthy lavendar tang appropriately named Chicken that will eat everything under the sun, including bryopsis, and a small (2") midas blenny named Melvin. Last night I glued a few sps frags in place now that they've acclimated to the lighting while attempting to dodge nips from Melvin...I guess he was mad that he only got fed once yesterday. Several of my pickier sps are still at Chad's, though I think I might have him bring a few more with him when he heads this direction on Friday. The calcium reactor is all set up and I've got coralline algae growing at a relatively good rate.

I previously mentioned that I was going to plumb a mantis tank into the system and two weekends ago I finally got that done. Here's a bad pic of the tank:

And here is its inhabitant, Sam, a G. ternatensis from Stomatopod.com:

He just arrived this morning so he's not super active yet, but he was smacking the living daylights out of the IV drip line I used to acclimate him, so I'm sure he's got a great personality ;)

My next update will be on a "jump guard" that I'm building.
