I'm setting up a qt system. Lesson learned for sure.

Think about coral and inverts too...

Just had a friend who is a Nazi about QT get ich in his frag tank (200 gallons).

Obviously came in on a rock / frag plug... it's a frag tank, so he's just going to ride it out since he isn't going to chance losing coral to QT. I'm just more worried about losing fish, so I could care less if I lost coral and inverts in QT.

Hi socal. I've just had the same as you , bought a tiny Catalonia goby from a lfs I don't usually use, wiped out half my fish. I tried every real safe treatment with no luck , even read about dosing ginger and tried this, which also lead to an accidental experiment with nutmeg (the less said about this the better). In the end i am sure all of this tinkering was worse than letting things be, I changed my uv bulbs, got my tank parameters as good as possible and waited 12 weeks the infection subsided and the rest of my fish are now doing well with no signs of white spot.

That elaborate system and no QT? Whoever been giving you advice needs to be fired. Your too worried about Apex, dosing, and other unnecessary items. Stick to the basics your overthinking this way too much. We all learn the hard way best of luck to you.

So I guess I would need to fire myself. Call it overconfidence, lack of experience or hubris, but I thought my "great" system was immune to quarantine. I've learned my lesson. Qt system in place. Reboot happening as we speak. Everything is back to stable.

Was an expensive and pain full lesson. Never again.

Live and learn brother. I never had a QT before. Don't really know where to stick one in my house now as I have no garage. Could possibly put one in the home office. Looking forward to your updates!

Are you SURE it's ick? Sounds a bit more like either velvet or flukes. I've hardly lost any fish to ick. If it IS flukes, then count your blessings. You can treat that IN THE DT with prazipro

It CAN! I got caught before I quarantined and had a wicked fluke outbreak. I didn't have enough aeration in my DT and between oxygen deprivation and an ammonia spike from the flukes, it was a slaughter.

However, my sps looked amazing after!

This time, I left my tank fallow (which hurt my sps due to a lack of nutrients) and set up a 75 g qt I followed all the rules.

FLUKES

I just dosed the tank again yesterday with prazi.

My fish stopped flashing within an hour, and now my tank has dead flukes floating around lol.

I dosed 2.5 oz of prazi in about 300g of water. I have 2 air pumps with air stones going. After 3 days, I'm going to do a large wc, and dose it again. I'll do that twice more, just to make sure I get them all.

But in short, yes, prazi is fine. Tube worms are toast though.

Hello. Instead of dosing straight in the aquarium you can use it in the food ...

1x 40mg pill into 100g of frozen food if I am not mistaken (I will check my notebook when I get home) and then feed the fish normally but only with that frozen food during the treatment.

Repeat after 8 days.

All the best,
Rui

We all have been there, as you go you will learn more. Every tank is different and what works me may not work for you. Be careful what you read on here since majority is opinion. However there is plenty of good information. Even QT has its draw backs, so make sure it is done correctly.

Amazing!

Amazing!

I just finished reading all the way up to now from the beginning and I have to say that this is amazing and inspires my build that I am starting, even though it is only going to be a 150g DT and a 40g sump. Everything I have read is helping me refine my plan for my project. So thank you!

I am so sorry for the losses though :sad1:

Thanks for asking. Tank is great. After the crash, I cleaned, medicated, changed water - everything is healthy.

For now Ive converted it to a FOWLER. Much less work, easier to maintain and manage. In the future I might start adding some corals but wife and kids were devastated with the crash and loss of life and the in ability to treat and medicate properly without killing corals is not something they want to go through again.

So for now, Ive got a bunch of tangs and angels. Might add a few triggers. Put in a few large puffers and while its not a reef, it is bringing joy back into maintaining the tank again. Family is happy and I am happy.

Next house I build it will have the ultimate system. Ive learned so much and if I have the chance to do it again- I will do it 10X better!
