1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

Damn it!! Just lost a yellow tang. It was perfectly healthy as far as I could tell. Found it stuck between the rocks in a place I can't reach. Crap!

yeah- I thought about it. Then I slapped myself for having a ridiculous thought like that. :)

In all seriousness, no. not even an option. When I first got my tank built, the folks from Tanked tried to talk me into one. About 6 grand for a fake reef. No thanks. Have never seen one that looked good and would not want that polluting my tank.

Oh gosh, so glad you are not getting anything like that.

Absolutely incredible. Just read through from start to finish and am glad you brought us along for the journey.

Your house is spectacular.

Quick question to the community. Summer is here along with the AZ heat. As I stated originally when I first started my thread, I did not put a chiller In the tank. My sump room is air conditioned as is my house and the pipes are underground. My hope was that my tank temp would be just fine with this set up.

Well last summer on the super hot days, the tank temp had spiked a bit. I had put up a couple of fans above the tank and the evaporative cooling worked well.

This Summer to minimize the noise in the house, I'm moving the fans to the sump room and setting it up to apex to control the fans to turn on automatically when the tank temp gets too high.

Knowing that I now only run a FOWLER, what is too hot? Meaning at what point should I turn the fans on? I'm planning them to turn on at 81.5 degrees. Is that too warm? I figured even if the fans aren't super effective, 82-83 fish should be fine.

Or should I have them turn on sooner?

Appreciate any insights.

81.5 should be fine. Even corals are ok getting that warm. I actually just had my tank spike of up 91 for a few hours due to a heater failure and most of my coral lived.

A fish can get trapped in a tide pool in very shallow water in the sun and survive. A lot of the old timers comment either in TOTM articles or in videos that 83-85 is acceptable for their reef tanks. 81.5 is extremely safe. 83 is probably safe. I wouldn't go above that.

Only if its not permanent IMHO, i live in the tropics and if my tank goes to 81-83 for a few hours usually no harm but continuously will cause issues, so if during midday its reaches 81-82 its ok, but not for the full daylight period.

One apex question. I've run out of outlets on the apex. I have two fans I want to hook up but used my last outlet with the first fan. Can I just hook up a splitter on the last outlet and plug in 2 fans? Or do I need to add an extra power strip?

I'll likely add a power strip in the future but for th short term, ok to split the last plug into two?

yes you can!

Thank you. I'm going to order a second powerbar so I have enough outlets for the second fan and a few more for some float valves that I want to add.

A float valve doesn't need any outlets to operate. If you're referring to a float switch, those can be hooked up to a break out box.

Mike- not a float valve. I misspoke. Float switches. To turn skimmer pumps off if sump level gets too high.

Yeah, so if you have a break out box already which I assume you do. You just wire those float switches up to the break out box and program it to turn off the outlet your skimmer is plugged into.

Just finished reading your thread. Thanks for sharing. I know I have a much smaller area that heats up easier (90 gal DSA) but I just hooked up an Artica DBM-250 as I'm also local here and temps were rising to 82. The thing is amazing. Cools the water down back to 78 from 79 in less than 5 minutes. I know your trying to avoid the chiller but seeing as how I just installed mine I wanted to share. Super easy to install and works like a champ. The peace of mind is great too. Regardless, thanks again for sharing your process. It was a joy to read.

Appreciate it. My only issue is that I would need a massive chiller. The evaporative fans seem to be doing the job just fine. I survived last summer and Im sure will survive this summer as well. Thank you again for taking the time to read my journey. Ive learned so much!
