1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

slief on his thread, had the LA FISH GUYS come over and buff out the scratches on his tank, without draining. Search for slief or LA fish guys on RC or youtube.

Sorry Slief, I wasn't paying good attention to the whole conversation this morning...
But yeah, he's been there, done that Socal.

+1 to the sleeve! They are 100000% must haves for cleaning acrylic tanks with magnet scrubbers.

As for removing scratches from acrylic while the tank is full, I started a thread here on the subject complete with step by step videos and step by step photos showing how to do it. My suggestion would be to wait until there are more scratches before you do it. If you decide to take on the endeavor now, you will want to work as small an area as possible as opposed to doing the entire viewing pane.

Here is a link to the thread.

I had seen this thread a while back and saved it to my favorites. That is something you want to keep around for future reference ;)

Its been a while since Ive put up an update but life has been super busy and frankly Ive been enjoying our tank at home with the family instead of constantly worrying about updating the thread.

As of now the Reef Genesis system has been put in place. One of the metering reservoirs is not draining- Kevin from Reef Genesis has been super helpful and we think it just might be a loose cable. Ill check that when I get home tonight. But besides that, Ive been super happy with the system.

The Reef Genesis system appears complex but frankly coupled with their Storm auto top off, it makes a lot of sense. It took me a while to get my head around the whole thing but I was just too slammed to pay any real attention to trying to figure it out.

One of my big areas of consternation in this whole build, and I knew it was going to happen from the beginning despite my best efforts, is all the cables, wires etc that are all over my fish room. I know project creep kicks in and what starts as a simple process morphs into a more complex one quickly. This is what is happening with me and despite all the best planning, I've got cables and wires all over the place. Its bugging me and I have to figure out what to do about it and how best to clean up everything.

One thing is for sure, as soon as reef genesis is set up and working properly, I will be taking a break from any new equipment for a long time. Ive got UV, auto water change, big *** sump, huge skimmer. Things like dosing pumps, ca reactors etc are going to wait. My stuff is good enough for now.

This also means that ill be starting with photosynthetic corals first- stuff that grows well and is easy to take care of- star polyps, pulsating zenias etc. Ill reevaluate the hard coral stuff and frankly I'm enjoying my fish more than corals so we will see what happens in the never ending decision as to which direction to take the tank.

Ill do a more thorough photo update in the near future. Lots going on in the tank and as soon as I do a bit of tidy up in the fish room, ill post a full pictorial. To all who have participated in this thread and who have given sage advice, my hats off to you and thank you for your input. I wouldnt be here without everyones help.

I know it's tempting to add more life to the tank but consider it carefully. GSP and Xenia are two serious weeds.

Take your time to get the automation working. Your tank seems to need to run for periods of time without your direct input. It will be much easier to maintain a stable environment, in absentia, with the automation on-line.

Call me crazy but the GSP is some of the best looking not fish stuff out there. To me it's more attractive than some of the corals I see.

Check out Cableorganizer.com.I am installing their 2" open slot wire ducting.
...all the cool kids are doing it!

BTW,I owe you pics of my Genesis but my set up is not perfect yet....although it sounds like you are up and running anyway. I am still a few weeks away from going "wet"

If you're looking for an awesome tang to really stand out, look into the Dussumieri Tang (Acanthurus dussumieri). They get pretty good size and get very colorful. I would also be vary cautious of putting an Achilles and Powder Blue in the same tank. You might get lucky and they may get along for awhile, but over time as they get older 2-5 years, the aggression may become very bad. I would do a pair of the powder blues before a pair of Achilles, but it has been done before. Every fish is different, some times you get lucky and sometimes you don't.

There will be 2 naso tangs going into the tank when I can source a proper pair. I will have two Hippo tangs as well. That will be it for the time being for the tangs. Couple of other fish planned and stocking list will be complete for 6 months.

Ill post updated photos after the holidays. Ive got a very good idea now of the direction of the tank and where I want to take it.

I ordered a dussumieri tang once. They only sent me half. I guess it was a little dussu coup.

Have to give props where props is due. It took me a while but I finally got the Reef Genesis system set up. Its quite nice and quite ingenious. I just didnt have the time to get things up and running till this week.

So as I hooked it up, the replacement water bin wasnt draining. I tried everything and no go. I emailed Kevin at Reef Genesis. He was AWESOME with online support and walked me through what I needed to check to see what the issue was. Was it the bin, was it the control module.

It turned out there was back pressure in the drain line was preventing the water from draining. It was an easy fix and the system is kicking ***.

I have it set to change 6 gallons a day, every day. Truly simple and truly automated.

Thank you Kevin and a big thumbs up from me regarding My Reef Genesis system.

Funny I like Xenia too. Weedy or not. In fact I really liked the Pom Pom that really stay more contained I haven't seen them in years. Not to hijack your thread but if someone wants to dump some pm me please. I have a nice color GSP frag if you want one. It's the neon green.

Until your stony coral population grows there is no rush. In the long run reactors are the most cost effective and least amount of time/maintenance for a large aquarium. I use Kalkwasser for all my top off, run a Calcium Rx with Dastaco Media for Calcium and Alkalinity and then only dose trace elements and acro power. With a tank your size, with a good coral population as it matures the demands for Calc and Alk will be high that dosing becomes costly and time consuming. A kalk reactor requires about 2 mins of attention every 2-3 weeks, and the calcium reactor is about 30mins of maintenance a couple of times a year. The Dastaco controller makes the Dastaco reactor one of the easiest to set and then make adjustments as the system matures. I am using a ph Probe in my Calc Rx with the Apex controlling the pH and it makes fiddling around with adjustments a thing of the past.

And if you are concerned about nutrient export rather than looking into pellets, look for a natural method - like a refugium. If you don't have the space in that giant sump for a refugium then look into the Pax Bellum algae reactor. It's a little more maintenance but packs a big whallop in a really small foot print.

I am intrigued by your DaStaCo reactor. Do you have any pics/videos? Where did you get it at?

This how I secured my Genesis float sensors to my sump.I do not trust the simple pressure clip as this is way too important not to secure properly.I used the clip but with stainless steel screws to both the casing and the sump wall.
