100g Cube Project

Will work for Frags Anytime :)

I'll take a pic of it from the front to get a better look at it. I attached it to the door, so it keeps all the extra light out. The door at the top is not cut completely square on the horizontal, so I will have to take it back down one of these days and run it through the table saw. I didn't have a table saw at the time, so I cut it all with a hand circular saw. The trim blends in rather nicely if you ask me. It looks way better than the original piece of flat wood I made.

I like the look of the corner when it is lit up, but I don't want o have to clean it :) I hate trying to get coraline from around the silicone in the corner of a tank. Thus, the piece of trim.

The tank is doing great. I got my quarantine/refugee installed. I had a mini cycle and have some algae growing in the tank now. I added a few lbs of sand from my 45gal to establish the southdown. Started the tank with some LR from goalie66 and just got some 30lbs (4 pieces) of awsome rocks from sarmck.
I'm still looking for a temporary pump for my skimmer, but other than that is is good to go. I'm not rushing into moving things over into the tank just yet. I tested all my paramaters the other night and everything was excellent. I like having both tanks up, so I'm not in a huge hurry. I'll see about getting some pictures up tomorrow.

as promised

as promised

As promised here are my updated pics.

Here is a pic of the back with my 10gal refuge/quarantine. I also have my auto top off hooked up finally. It is below and nothing that you can see. Just a 5gal bucket hooked up to a 1/4 hose on a float valve into the sump.

Here is an updated pic of the plumbing above the tank. I am planning on moving my lock line up some, to keep them out of the water more. I will also be covering up my clear flex tubing, because I am getting algae growth in it. Finally, I have added a piece of acrilyc over the top of the overflow because i was having splashing issues.

Just an updated pic from the front of the tank. Still battling micro bubbles a little, but not too bad. I just have so much flow through my sump that I really need another baffle. The refuge adds larger bubbles, but I'm not too concerned about those.

The rocks are abviously just sitting in there at the moment. I'm still waiting for some base rock before I start doing any major arranging. The only inhabitants are lots of pods and a few snails that were buried in the sand that I took from the 45gal.

That Looks good. Is the bottom door popping open? you can use a magnet or Velcro to keep it from coming open..

those pods should grow crazy being the only thing in the tank. Do you keep the lights off?

I have the lights on a short cycle right now, about 6 hours a day.

I actually have the 45 gal plugged into my outlets for the new tank. It is just a power strip cord holding the door open. I didn't think to use velcro, but I put a small latch on the top one, because it was not closing all the way.. If you look in the before picture, there were two circuits run next to the 45 on the wall. I moved them inside the closet for the new tank. Thus, I didn't have any place to plug in everything for the 45, so they are both running from those two circuits.

Nice that you have the space behind it. I've found the thing I hate most about my cube is the lack of storage space underneath.

Alright! A MI resident with an Illini avatar.

How's this project going anyway? I'm eager to see it! :)

It's Alive

It's Alive

Sorry for the long time in updates. I just got my rocks arranged and started transferring corals last weekend.

Tank with most of the rock that will be in the tank. I also transferred most of my corals into the tank and my wrasse.

Just some zoas in my tank

Some mroe

Finally, a picture of the closet (half of it is still being used as a closet). Refuge has plants in it now, skimmer should be hooked up by this weekend.

I'm planning on getting the brain coral, RBTA, and Maxima Clam transferred over this weekend. The old 45g tank should be ready to be taken down.

Great thread...I hope the updates keep coming!

Are you satisfied with the Glasscages cube tank? Anything you'd change? Sorry for the questions a little off topic, but I'm about to order a ~100g cube from CG as well and looking for some input from folks here on RC.

THANKS in advance,
Matt

Pls email LoweM@wi.rr.com if you don't want to clog up this thread...

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I have been swamped lately and just have not made it to RC lately. I do need to put a few more updated pictures online. Everything has been offically moved to the new tank and the 45g is down.

If I would have ordered the tank for myself and planned to put it in the wall, I would have made it a corner overflow instead of in the middle. I got a great deal on it, so I'm not complaining. The corners could be much better, so either plan on taking the time to trim and scrape the silicone off or cover them up like I did. Other than that I have no complaints with it. I would have liked the overflow cover to be black, but the speckled color that it is seems fine. Have them drill it for you and provide the bulkheads. That way you know everything will fit. Good Luck to you!

Hey thanks. One more question. I've heard GC's tanks don't have an 'even' bottom but have bracing around the sides? I planned on doing a bottom with starboard on it and think this would be a problem to put a piece level on the entire bottom. Can you tell me about your tank if that is true? Thanks again -

Matt

The one GC tank I've seen had the inside euro-bracing like your talking about. Its no big deal to go with Starboard or Cutting board for those tanks. Just order the material smaller so that it fits between the braces. I have cutting board on the bottom of my tank and had to trim it so it would fit around my overflow.
Silicone doesnt stick real well to starboard or cuttingboard, but I would reccomend siliconing it to the tank bottom. I have areas that are tougher to get at with regards to siphoning, and if I had siliconed it to the tank, I would have less trouble getting at the detritus.
JMO,

Nick

Jeff's (gath2) tank has the bracing on the bottom like Nick said.

I'm ready for more pics Jeff! ;) I want to see your new clam

Tom

Yes the bottoms of GC tanks do have the bracing. I would just put the starboard on top of the bracing I don't think that would hurt anything. You could tell Glasscages what you plan on doing and they might be able to fill the bottom with glass, to make it all even. I do wish my tank (GC also) was all even at the bottom. The Power heads move the sand around a little and the bracing always seems to show because it is 1/2" thick.

In the picture below you can see the bracing on the bottom. I believe it is 2 - 2 Ã"šÃ‚½" wide by Ã"šÃ‚½" thick all the way around the tank. Just like the top.

I like it when other people answer the questions for me :)

The bracing is all around, so I would add another piece of glass like Long suggested or another piece of starboard to the middle to fill that gap. Glass would most likely be cheaper.
