100g My First Tank

I would also like to know where you can get rock for that cheap. $3/lb locally seems about impossible... maybe not, but close. Yeah, you can find it that cheap online, but by the time you add shipping you're back at $3/lb. I did get lucky and theres a guy who lives in my town who bought a LOT of Tonga at like $3.99/lb, but I doubt very many do.

Also, two 250w MHs should be fine. That's not too much lighting.

As far as chillers, a lot of times it depends on your geographic location in addition to your lights and how they're mounted.

Nice tank and good luck!

Anthony Calfo has been in my home taking pictures of my tanks and never commented at all about too much light or poor flows. I think he was quite impressed actually and he even let me use his mesoscope to check out all the neat microscopic things in the tank! Yes good flows are just as important but don't skimp on lighting and above all make sure you use good RO/DI water for consistency.
I ran a dedicated 20amp GFCI circuit for most of my tanks needs but I also split parts of the pumping equipment on other circuits in case one circuit or another fails for any reason.

I think I may have come across wrong my point was you don't need 250's to keep corals of any kind. BTW I met you at your club when Calfo spoke there a year or two ago. Yes your flow looks great too btw.

I checked out the link and two things

One it is fiji more dense so its a lot heavier compared to what I was looking at the tonga uaniva which is much much lighter and more pourus which would make the price per pound almost equal?

Also they say they ship out after they receive it, like es hours. Wouldn't that make it un-cured?

Correct me if I'm wrong please :) cause it sounds awesome cause I'm only 45 mins from LAX

His shipping is cheap plus you can pick it up if you are that close.

Pistonkev... have you ordered from them? IE, do you know if they ship what they show? I have a feeling they do, but some places don't.

If you can get rock drop shipped to the air freight terminal it will save you lots of money. A group of us here in Phoenix had over 800 lbs of rock shipped air freight by Southwest airlines air freight and picked it up at the airport and it averaged about $3 a pound depending on the type of rock. I got Kaelini myself and really like the shapes and colors it has.

Yes my friend just got an order a week ago it's very nice not quite that cherry picked peice in the picture but well worth the money. I have paid 5 plus for stuff that doesn't look as good. I don't work for him btw I just know what my friend got from him.

Cool deal!

I wish I wasn't on the opposite side of the continent!

However, I am getting 60lbs of rock for free in May, so I can't complain too much. :D

It was uncured but "fully cured" is not always what its cracked up to be. You will almost certainly go through a cycle and die off still only smaller and a little less drastic.

The rock you got was it fully cured or did you have to cure it

It's fully cured but the stuff had so much life on it it had some die off. You can just do a 15% to 25% water change in a week or so. Or let the tank run it's course. Are you going to IMAC? you should you will learn more in three days then 5 years here. Not saying this isn't a great site and there is a lot to learn here.

I think I'm still leaning towards the lfs 2 miles down the road. He has nice pieces of tonga branch, eva and uaniva very nicely cured. He has shown me the progress of all the rock he has gotten for the past two months and its very nice.

Plus I picked up a piece of fiji and was very heavy and then picked up a double the size piece of tonga and was very light.

Nothing wrong with that I just was giving you some options.

Instead of maxi jet mods.....for the price you can get a couple of these.....

I have added three to my tank for over 2000 GPH in a 65.....and it actually speads it out so the coral doesnt lose its flesh....its a cheaper option to the seio with similar results...they are very sturdy and magnetic grip so it never loses suction.....
