10G JBJ Cubey build out

Are you testing nitrate and Po4?

Yes once a month I test nitrate, phosphate (all undetectable) and calcium. I weekly test salinity and alk. I do weekly water changes of one gallon - 10%. Salinity has been very stable at 1.025, alk still varies around 8.0. Still working on dialing two part in.

Separately i wasn't getting much coralline algae until I read a report that said you won't of your white spectrum is too intense which mine was. I don't really like scraping coralline algae of the glass and pumps but it is a good indicator of stable tank so each week i lowered just the white spectrum on the lights and now I've got coralline algae growing all over the tank. I've also noticed that zooamthinds looks better too. So far SPS appear unchanged.

10G JBJ Cubey build out

Seven days of "˜dry' skimming. Still a bit wet but definitely pulling out the organics.

Thx a definite work in progress.

The tank stand holds mostly electronics with supplies in the cabinet in the right. Originally I wasn't going to add any mods nor have wires and tubes about and that has been a complete failure. 8^). In order to host colorful SPS in a tiny volume you know you need stability, good water quality and flow. I automated as much as possible and still clean filters, collection cups and perform weekly water changes - and love it. I didnt think I'd miss the daily tinkering or even maintenance tasks but i did and glad I'm back.

Why weekly small water changes?

Attached are two pictures of what the bottom and MP10s look like after one week. It's hard to take pics of the debris in the sump and diatom/algae growth but it's there.

I take the time each week to clean all the pumps, siphon the sump, clean glass rinse the filter and chaeto and of course change out 1 gallon - the water is never clear.

For those with technical bent : here is alk drift with daily two part automated dosing:

3/4 - 9.6 alk
3/6 - 9.3 alk
3/10 - 8.9 alk

I think my alk is stable enough but but might adjust dosage a bit. I do add teaspoon of magnesium weekly.

Sometimes I think I've lost my paired gobie and shrimp cuz I won't see them for days then on a feeding day they pop out together to make a meal of some mysis. Beautiful pair but only get to see them every once and awhile.

Yesterday my Xenia deflated (crashed?) see pic. I checked alk=8.6, sg=1.0255 so alk a little low but not traumatically so. Other corals are fine with great polyp extension.

Any suggestions other than water change?

Just tried brief iodine dip to see if that makes any difference

Yeah the stuff is as much fun to play with as the tank itself.

Update: the Xenia is gone. Not just dead like there is no evidence it ever existed. Sad day especially since I don't know why it deflated then disappeared.

Quick question, I know the footprint of the tank is roughly 12 x 15 but could you tell me what's the measurement of the front glass? (Is it 12 or 15)

Tank looks killer. I just filled up my current JBJ 24 and I'm looking for skimmer options. It looks like yours is pulling decent amount. Do you recall the brand you are using?

I've been keeping reefs for 20 years, and I'm finally considering a work reef. I've had a 3G FW CRS Shrimp tank at work for about 6 years and it's become famous in the office.

Right now the 10G JBJ Cubey is the front runner for my work desktop tank, I plan to build a tiny stand, just large enough to contain the APEX controller and bring the tank about 6 inches up for better viewing.

After running this tank for a couple of years, would you recommend it? Keep in mind that I know the lighting is insufficient and I will be replacing it before the tank sees water.

Thank you,
Whiskey
