120 Gallon Setup Has Begun

This will be a predominantly sps tank. Maybe a few select soft and LPS corals.

I made some progess on the plumbing tonight. I have most of the joints glued. Just a few more steps to go then I should be able to begin the freshwater testing. Hopefully will have some water in it this weekend.

After reading about how they leak, I decided to replace the bulkhead that came with the stock tank. I replaced it with one purchased from savko.com. I had to chisel out some of the ribs in the stock tank so the bulkhead would seat flat against the tub.

Here is a wide angle shot showing all of the plumbing done so far. Just have to glue a few joints, secure the pipes with some straps and install the spa flex that will go into the tub. I should be able to get some freshwater in for testing this weekend.

The black pipe coming through the wall on the left is the drain for my closed loop. I haven't really thought about how I'm going to make it yet so I'll probably just cap off this pipe until I can work on it. I'm ready to get some water in!

WE HAVE WATER!

WE HAVE WATER!

Although it is only freshwater. I finally finished the plumbing and began freshwater testing on Saturday.

Final plumbing setup

Here is my return. I will shorten it and drill a siphon break hole later. In this picture, you get a better shot of my overflow box. It does not go all the way to the bottom of the tank.

Here is a shot of the overflow pipes going through the wall. I will install escutcheon plates to clean up the holes a bit.

I only tested for about 20 minutes but so far NO LEAKS! I guess I got lucky.

Today I will plumb in the skimmer and install the bubble towers in the sump.

The Little Giant return pump is louder than I expected. I'll have to work on that and see if I can quiet it down any.

I'm getting closer!

I have the LG4 pump also. It is extremely loud. I was able to quiet it down by using 2 6 in. pieces of spa flex on the input and output. You can't put enough mouse pads under it to quiet it down. Also, it puts out a fair amount of heat so keep that in mind. My wife said to ask if you will build us a stand like yours..:D.
Hurry up and get that thing set-up. We will need to group order some stuff when your ready. I am changing my 120 over to all SPS/Zoos. Let me know if you need help or anything.

If you want some show piece softies just let me know. I will be getting rid of some pretty large corals here in the future.

Bobby, I hope to be ready for an order soon. I have not been buying any livestock because I just want to get the new tank up and running.

I have all of the softies I need but my nephew has a fairly new tank and he would probably be interested in some. Let me know what you have when you are ready to sell.

DIY Stockman Standpipe

DIY Stockman Standpipe

Today I built a DIY stockman standpipe to quiet the overflow a bit. Since my tank is drilled in the back and not the bottom, I'm have a fairly limited amount of space so I had to make a modified version.

Here are the main pieces

mini-IMG_8350.jpg

First I drilled holes

Then I cut away between the ribs

This piece goes into a 3" coupling

Then the 1 1/2" pvc goes into the bottom

I cut slits into a 1 1/2" cap for air. This piece goes into the top

With the way my overflow is built, I had to angle the standpipe so it would fit. Here is the finished product

My water level inside the overflow was higher than I wanted so I cut away a little more of the pipe
mini-IMG_8369.jpg

It is still a little loud but I think that is because I currently have my drain pipe submerged in my sump. I'll correct that this evening and see if it is a little quieter.

Nice setup. Now the fun begins!

If your looking for an absolutely silent overflow check out herbies method.

marino420td - very well thoughout setup, I love your canopy and stand. subzero420 - do you have a link?

Man thats a sweet setup.....

can you take some pics of the overall sump setup....I find it as interesting as the tank itself..

My Little Giant pump was running hot so I had to change it out for a GenX Mak4. It turns out the Little Giant pump was missing one of the ceramic washers on the impeller. I guess I lost it when I was cleaning it.

The wall plates I had to order came in today. I installed them so the electrical panel is complete.

Here is a pic of the entire sump setup showing the electrical panel.

I purchases 3- 40 lb bags of sand today along with a box of salt mix. I hope to get saltwater in the system this weekend.

I need suggestions on how to make the overflow and plumbing quieter. As you can see in a post above, I made a modified Stockman standpipe but it is still loud. I am getting the flushing sound then the sound of water gushing through the pipes.

My tank is drilled through the back, not the bottom. And the overflow box does not go all the way to the bottom of the tank.

Here is the best picture I could get of the overflow.
mini-IMG_8383.jpg

Since there is only one hole inthe overflow box, I can't use Herbie's method because I do not have an emergency drain. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm having the same issue, I'm going to install a air valve in the top of the standpipe to fine tune the amount of air, hopefully it will quiet it down. I also noticed some of the noise from mine is caused from my standpipe being to low so the water coming over the overflow is adding to the noise. At least your sump is in another room, I have that to deal with also.
