120 Gallon Setup Has Begun

You could try painting any PVC from the Closed Loop that is visible with Krylon Fusion Black paint. That is what I did and it blends in very very well.
:)

Here is a picture. There are closed loop returns one each in the front left and front right top corner of the tank both PVC 45 degree. In the back right hand top is a 90 degree piece of PVC that is the return pump line from the sump. You cannot see any of them very easily because they were all spray painted black.

That does look nice. I have several pieces rising from the bottom of my tank for the closed loop and I think I will pull them out today and paint them. That's a good tip.

A few updated pics

I changed out some of my closed loop fittings today and replace them with LocLine.

Marino, that's a clever idea for a jig for cutting the teeth on your overflow. I think I will copy that someday.

And JustOne. . . . , as far as the painting with the krylon, WOW I had a disaster. I pulled my PVC out to paint it (in a rush) before 'scaping the new live rock I bought. I dried the PVC and spray painted each piece and waited for it to dry. The can said 15 minutes but it took nearly two hours. That should have been the first sign something was not right.

Anyway after it felt dry I decided to soak it in my kitchen sink to make sure it was clean before placing it back in the tank. After 15 minutes of soaking it started to get a bubble type of finish and I could scrape it off in huge chunks with my fingernail.

I freaked! I ended up cleaning one piece and replacing the rest. That was a $45 mistake. Still not sure what went wrong.

Anyways, food for thought.

when painting any shiny surface it is very very important to use a scotch brite pad and buff the sheen off of the pvc. paint adheres through a mechanical and chemical bond, and without the correct mechanical bond, paint will simply peel off. you should be able to run a fingernail over a painted surface without fear of peeling the paint off.

as far as 2hr dry time, that is strange, maybe you didnt shake the can long enough, but i hardly ever shake the can for more than like 30 seconds straight, sometimes theres just a bad batch of paint that leaves the factory..

I also think that I should have washed the PVC a littler more thoroughly prior to painting. It had been in the tank going through a wet-dry run and was a little slimy. I did pre-wash but maybe not enough.

Anyway, sorry to get off subject. back to the 120!

Sorry about the loss of the pvc. ??? Not really sure what happened. Krylon Fusion is excellent spray paint and really does an excellent job of covering PVC or other plastics. Like was mentioned before ... perhaps there was some film or something over the surface that prevented the paint from getting a good bite into the plastic. I did let mine dry over night before washing and then putting into the tank. I love the look... you can hardly see the fittings. Except now a little it is getting some good coralline. :)

I had not seen your thread in a while. It looks great, I'm glad you decided to go with the loc line.

Not sure if you are still having algae problem or not, but it looked like you were using regular tap water to fill your tank. If this is the case, that could cause some big problems, like aglae outbreaks, in the future.. This may have already been addressed in the thread some where.. If not I would suggest doing your water changes with RO/DI water..

Wow, Awsome stand, sump room, and tank, Just tagging along to see the progress for inspiration on my future 120g ,Keep it going and cant wait to see it stacked with frags for growth.

I have never used tap water in any of my tanks. Must be confused with another. But no algae problems whatsoever in this tank so far. Knock on wood!

Chaeto is beginning to grow in the fuge. There is some red hairlike algae growing as well. Not too concerned about it yet. Anyone know what this stuff is?

I added a fairy wrasse yesterday. Nice looking fish. Once he gets comfortable, I'll get a picture of him to post.

A few updates

I switched out my closed loop pump. I upgraded to a Sequence Dart. This pump is awesome. Much more flow and completely silent!

mini-IMG_2152.jpg

I also changed the lighting on my fuge. I just can't seem to get the growth of my chaeto the way some RC members do. I hear stories of pruning back every week because it grows so fast. I just don't get that. If anyone has a light suggestion, let me know.

I ordered some GARF grunge and put into the fuge. Honestly, I was a little dissapointed with this stuff. I still haven't seen any life forms that hitchhiked in the grunge.

The Naso tang is now eating like a pig. I feed him nori sheets I bought at my local grocery store and he tears this stuff up!

The Dart is a very nice pump. I run mine next to an Iwaki (Japanese motor and all) and there is simply no comparison in sound levels.

The lights I use in my fuge are a florescent flood lite that I have read good reviews about. They have a great PAR output and seem to run very cool. As far as encouraging growth, I have only had them in service for a week so I am afraid this info maybe premature.

Your Naso tang is awesome. Does he bother other stuff in your tank at all.
