120 Gallon Setup Has Begun

I didn't think you did but was wondering, I know some people swear by running a qt and doing hyposalinity dips among other things to keep from having any issues in their display and some people acclimate and toss them in.

Just finished slogging through all the pages of this post. Great tank and pump room as well as stand! I am getting ready to setup a new 125 and am really interested in what you have done so far. The one question I do have is if you are worried about running that return line from your fuge along your electrical panels. Are they GFI? Probably would never be an issue but what about a busted PVC line? Just a thought.

I'm not too worried about it. Since it is just a drain pipe, there is no water pressure on it. And you will notice that I used a solid piece with no joints, except for the elbow. Didn't have much choice really.

Hi Marino

Thanks for posting a reply in my thread about rubbermaid stock tanks. I have been following along here and I am working on my tank room, sump, skimmer etc.

Does a film develop on the surface of the water in the sump? Not alot of flow there so I was wondering what will prevent a film from developing. (I can see a nascent film developing in my sump after about 48 hours).

Thanks!

Will

No film develops on the water surface in the sump. I have a powerhead in my sump pointing at the surface for agitation as well as to keep detritus suspended. Before I did this, I would occassionally have to pull the drain line out of the bubble trap and let it empty directly into the sump and the bubbles would take care of the film.

Saltwater_Dog- thanks. I tried to plan everything but still ran into many surprises on the way.

I can definitely back you up on the surprises. I am in the staining processes and I am going with a Minwax Mahogany gel stain. It is dark, but I like it. Ill post a pic hopefully after work today if it looks like it doesn’t need more stain.

This week I finished my water storage/mixing station. Here are some pics

mini-IMG_5517.jpg

In this picture, the top can holds my ro/di water and has a float valve in it connected to my ro/di filter. This can also has an emergency overflow so if the float valve fails, the excess will spill into the sink below and go down the drain.

The bottom can is for mixing saltwater. It will have a mag 5 pump within to mix/circulate the water.

The entire system is hard plumbed into my sump room so I can pump fresh or saltwater into my system without carrying buckets. I plan to add a switched outlet for the pump with switches in both this room and the sump room.

To further explain the design: The left valve from the top can feeds freshwater to the pump. the right valve allows me to quickly fill the salt mixing container or jugs used on my other tank.

The valve from the bottom can feeds saltwater to the pump so I can perform quick water changes. This water is pumped through the same plumbing into my sump room.

I also added this valve:

It is used to empty the pipes of any remaining water. It will also allow me to pump water into the sink or a container if needed.

You might have seen this in the DIY forum but thought I would post here as well. I'm very happy with the system so far. It makes refilling my ATO much easier and will make water changes a snap.

I also discovered this week that I once again have redbugs. I have some Interceptor left over from the last treatment so I'll be going through that again soon.

Nothing new as far as tank inhabitants. Everything is growing great, especially since I installed my CA reactor.

Hey Marino, long time no talk and long time no post (me that is) The tank looks great!!!!!!! I was just wondering, are you still using the spice rack? and if so do you have a pic of it?

I am looking for something to facilitate the organization of all the chemical bottles but cant seem to find anything.

I was even starting to think of possibly using a shampoo bottle organizer.

If you have any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.:D

Good to hear from you Steelerfan. I hope your tank is doing well.

Here is a picture of the spice rack inside my stand. About $5 at General Dollar Store. I keep food and a baster in it. Of course, you see the paper towel holder on the other door. I can't tell you how handy this has been. I'm always using paper towels!

Here is another small rack I installed near my refugium. I keep super glue for frags, frag cutters, a small flashlight, utility knife, etc. in this. Very handy. I also made that turkey baster holder from a small section of 1 1/2" pvc and a pvc cap. The cap catches any water left to drip out of the baster when finished.

wow... nice set up.... love the stand... I just finished reading through all 15 pages of this thread and all of the pages on the stand build thread... 3 hours later and well worth it.

Great stuff!

Rich

I have to say the same. I have followed along and have copied a lot of Marino has done and I am very happy so far. GREAT IDEAS MAN!!

Well time has really flown this summer and I just realized my tank just passed the 1 year point. Water went in July 23, 2006. I have fought a flood and red bugs but things are going well now. Here is an early image followed by some shots from last night. I didn't have time to clean or work at the pictures. Just wanted to get something up for reference.

WOW!! Awesome set up. Thanks for such a detailed posting. I am planning an upgrade and you have provided much food for thought.

BTW: Happy Birthday to your beautiful tank!

Been following for a while. Looks GREAT! Did you change your lighting setup or are the new pics actinic only. Happy Tankiversary!

I changed from Reeflux 10K bulbs to Reeflux 12K bulbs. It is not that blue in person but I can't seem to get the pictures to reflect accurately.
