I have had two tanks on carpet, 75 and 90 and they both did fine.

I had a 180g on carpet myself with no issues, shimmed it just like I would my tanks on hardwood/concrete. Just buy a little rubber-backed rug (i think rubbermaid makes them as bath mats) to put in front of the tank when you do maintenance just in case of small spills and the like.

If you have the option to do anything you want, I might consider putting down a "pad" of very flat tile. I would look into it whether it is suitable for the weight of your tank as I have no direct experience in doing this. Spills happen and cleaning time owns breeze. Plus over the years W2W carpet wears out and can't be replaced under the tank without Herculean effort. Just my 2 cents.
