14 years of 20,000 gallons

I'll be in NYC 10/24-10/26/14.
I was also born on L.I.; but raised in the south since my 1st year.
Somehow now reside in WI though- go figure.

I will try and make it over to L.I. to view this in person.
Very nice, IMHO- it appears slighlty over- stocked with fish.

I agree!!! He's made lots of changes through the year or two like remove his angels SO SAD! But he opened reef up nicely and there's more going on acro wise and in depths also. I recommend a tour in the back on top of the metal crates if you lucky enough to get one. Just don't fall in. !!!

One more thing. This is a must see exhibit. Worth coming to long island for. Sheer magnitude of detail and breadth and scope. I'm game to meet people there on Fridays!!

I was very excited when they started building and have been a yearly member since the aquarium opened. I have been lucky to see Joe's reef grow and evolve year by year.
I also miss the large Angle's they were a site.
I was at the Aquarium one day with one of my young boy's looking at the reef something I do all the time until my kids and wife drag me away when Joe walked by and asked if my son wanted to feed the fish . Well my son was very excited and so was I. Joe really works hard at it and it is a must see for every one the photos do no justice.

Ya. If they are around joe and laura. Most of time they are and they know your a reef guy they will be very gracious and take you back behind the scenes. I've been lucky enough to work with them on my new project with consulting work and rock decor and look forward to many years of relationship. Btw they saved my expensive deep water butterfly!!!!

I love this tank! And it's always a pleasure to see Joe. I've been going there with my husband and kids for about 10 years. Fun for all ages!

Hey
Not sure if you visited or not. The fish population is fine, the pictures can be misleading because sometimes they are mostly on one side or the other thinking they are going to be fed.

Some fish are originals and are now over 14 years old, some of the corals I've had for 24 years, and some of the acros date back over 20 years.

Thanks for the kind words.

A question that may be from a wrong impression based on the photos: It seems to me there is a preponderance of tangs. How natural is the balance of numbers of different fish species and members thereof in this tank to a natural reef? I aksed the same question of Charles Delbeek about the Steinhart's monster reef tank and he told me it is a very close representation of the fish on a natural reef.

Thx,

Dave.M

Hey Joe, it's been some time since I've seen you or that beautiful tank. Looks great after all these years. That tank still amaze's me kudos to you and your staff!

Joe recently gave a talk at our LIRA meeting. He had some nice slides and videos of the tank and of some of the changes he made, one of which is switching over from MH to LED. It will be interesting to see how the system responds to this change.

I have yet to see this tank in person and planned on doing so today after the NERAC meet, but the best laid plans didn't work out that way :( I'm sure he's busy this afternoon as the aquarium is the host location for a dinner after the event. Would have been nice to have attended.

How can the tank be overstock with fish if all the fishes, corals and anemones are all in great shape along with the tank show no evidence of nutrient overload.

Great looking tank. Just one question, I did not see any clownfish in the anemones. Are there any clownfish in the tank?
