150 Watt Viper

I have two on my 156 to supplement the light output of my Current Outer Orbit fixture:

The choice for me was between JBJ and Coralife. The Coralife seems to be beefier and therefore a little more stable, but the JBJ's have more freedom to arrange position. In particular, the bottom "arm" on the Coralife unit is integrally formed with the clamp, and there is one pivot point, between the upper arm and the lower arm. The light head -- which is about 12 inches long by 5 inches wide -- can be slid fore and aft along the upper arm.

The JBJ's are pivoted between the lower arm and the clamp, between the lower and upper arm, and between the upper arm and the lighting head. This allows much greater flexibility in positioning, which was important for me to be able to fit them in under my fixture. The light head is als much smaller -- about 4 inches by 6 inches. That's because the Coralife has cooling fan in the light head, whereas the JBJ does not. As you can see, however, I have other cooling fans (open topped tank; those fans you see are all I need to control temp rock steady). The JBJ arms are not as thick as the Coralife arms, which lets the head move laterally sort of easily.

There's also an issue re UV protection. The Coralife unit relies on the bulb itself having a UV shield, and therefore doesn't have full UV glass covering.. To ensure proper UV in the future, you're stuck with Coralife bulbs. JBJ's, on the other hand, have UV glass over the entire bulb.

Some people have noted that JBJ's are more of a spotlight effect, whereas the Coralifes are a little more distributed. Given my application, however (supplementing other light), I don't see it so terribly.

Thanks for the detailed response.

So if you were to do this again, the JBJ would still be your first choice?

Even if I were using for more conventional application (nano's) and didn't need the positionability factor as much, probably yes. The UV glass/Coralife bulb issue is there. Just need to make sure the clamps are secure, and be careful around them so you don't whack em, which could torque/distort them more easily than the Coralife.

There is definitely warmth below them, and the metal gets very hot to the touch. I would NOT advise putting them in a hood.
