150g Tank Stock Help Please.

In Memoriam
Well, Im going to be starting up a 150g Marineland Deep Dimension Aquarium (36"x36"x27") and I would like to know what type of fish I could stock in a tank of this size, and if they would coincide w/ each other in the environment that I intend to provide for them. This will be a reef tank, which will be occupied by mostly SPS and LPS.

- Magnificent Foxface (Siganus magnificus)
- Yellow Eyed Kole Tang (Ctenochaetus strigosus)
- Lamarck's Angelfish (Genicanthus lamarck)
- Flame Hawkfish (Neocirrhitus armatus)
- Green Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus)
- Pair of Saddleback Clownfish (Amphiprion polymnus)
- Starry Blenny (Salarias ramosus)

I was also thinking of adding other fish, but I wasn't sure. Any insight would be great and greatly appreciated.

The plan for filtration is as follows:

160# Liverock in the Display & 40# LR in Sump
40g Sump w/ Chaeto, DSB, and LR Rubble
Bubble King Mini 180 Gen 2 Protein Skimmer
Phosban Reactors 1 w/ Carbon & 1 w/Phosban/GFO
Naturally will be using Ro/Di Water

(I might have forgot to put one of the filtration components as I feel like I'm missing something).

Thanks in advance.

That's a nice stock list for a 150g. I would consider adding a pair of Lamarck's if you can find a male (or you could try adding 2 females and hope one will change).

I think flame hawks are great. However, I don't keep one anymore due to having an sps tank. I think they may irritate the corals when they 'perch' but I'm not sure if this is correct.
You could also add a small group of anthias or a group of glass cardinals.

Kole tangs are nice but imo there are nicer tangs which could go in a 150g. JMO.

Happy reefing!

That list sounds good. I would wait at least 6 months to a year to add the green mandarin to let your copepode population develope. Also it is a good idea to add live copepods to the refuge and main display to get the population a jump start.

Matt,

Yeah I know what you mean when you say the perching might irritate corals, but I have a flamehawk in a 55g Tank atm, and all he ever does is perch on my Koralias and go for a swim. So we'll have to see.

What other tang would you suggest in this tank rather than the Kole?

I will consider the Anthias, what about Lyretails, I saw that Myerst had them, and he seemed to love them (as far as I can tell from his posts), but how many would you suggest and if I would go w/ them should I add all females and let them "choose" or add a male and a few females?

Jason,

I was planning on putting the Mandarin in after about 1 year or so and making it my last fish, and I was thinking about instead of buying pods, I would assume they would populate via the liverock and chaeto that I would be getting from local reefers.

Updated proposed stocklist is as follows:
- Magnificent Foxface (Siganus magnificus)
- (Insert Tang(s) Here)
- Pair of Lamarck's Angelfish (Genicanthus lamarck)
- Flame Hawkfish (Neocirrhitus armatus)
- Green Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus)
- Pair of Saddleback Clownfish (Amphiprion polymnus)
- Starry Blenny (Salarias ramosus)
- (Insert Anthias Here)

And that would ultimately be it, but its kinda sad that I can't put my Humu in there, as I love him to death and hes such a ham.

Thanks.

Instead of a kole tang, why not a pyramid butterflyfish?

The anthias are up to you, but I would add maybe one sunburst anthias and a large group of threadfin cardinals instead. It is up to you though.

That's a really nice suggestion. It would look great

tcmfish,

I'll just do all threadfin cardinals, I'm not much of a fan of Sunburst Anthias, but to each their own, and thanks for the suggestion. How many would you suggest for the group of cardinals?

Instead of a Butterflyfish would it be possible to add a triggerfish of some sort? Im partial to triggerfish, but I know I can't keep a Crosshatch, and would like the fish to be reef-safe.

Thanks.

I wouldn't put a trigger in there, the reef safe ones are very active (bluethroats, crosshatches, sargassum, niger, pinktail...) and get pretty large. You don't have to keep a butterfly, just a suggestion, and like matt said a purple tang, maybe?

For the cardinals, I would say as many as you can. Some usually die because of shipping, so get more than you want. Once they are established they are hardy. If you can get 20, and you will have a good size group.

You can also pair up your mandarin, and they will spawn nightly.

I would go for 20 threadfins. Not all will make it so, hopefully you will be left with approx 15. You could even try more!

Hmmm.. I was also thinking of instead of the Tang idea I would try a copperband butterflyfish? I've read they're hard to get eating. Any info on this?

Thanks.

Stocklist looks like this so far:

- Magnificent Foxface (Siganus magnificus)
- (Purple Tang or Copperband Butterflyfish)
- Pair of Lamarck's Angelfish (Genicanthus lamarck)
- Pair of Green Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus)
- Pair of Saddleback Clownfish (Amphiprion polymnus)
- Starry Blenny (Salarias ramosus)
- 20 Threadfin Cardinalfish (Apogon leptacanthus)

I decided to forego the Hawkfish also because I'd like to have Cleaner Shrimp and my current Hawkfish can just stay in my 55g.

Depending on your choice of LPS you could be taking a risk with the copperband, but there are lots of success stories so if you like the fish I would take the fish over the coral.

I was thinking maybe Frogspawn, Chalice, Acans, and Blastos would be the choice of LPS. I am mainly interested in keeping ~12+ Heads of Frogspawn rather than a nem, but I would take the copperband over the coral anyday.

Stocklist as follows:

- Magnificent Foxface (Siganus magnificus)
- Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus)
- Pair of Lamarck's Angelfish (Genicanthus lamarck)
- Pair of Green Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus)
- Pair of Saddleback Clownfish (Amphiprion polymnus)
- Starry Blenny (Salarias ramosus)
- 20 Threadfin Cardinalfish (Apogon leptacanthus)

Thanks, think I could add anything else? I was thinking of some type of wrasse, but I wasn't sure if they would compete for pods w/ the Madarins.

I've heard saddleback clowns get very aggressive as adults, especially when spawning. Anyone with personal experience?

I like the look of the purple tang, I would go with one of those over a butterfly. It will also be a nice contrast to the colors and look of your other fish.

Well it'll be ~3-5 months before I stock the tank up, as I have the tank, sump, skimmer, but I have to think about the rest of the equipment for the tank (reeftank).

Thanks for your ideas.
Steve

I have been slowing stocking my 150g over the last few months and am at:

- 4" SingleSpot Foxface
- 3" Unicorn Tang
- 2" Chocolate Tang
- 1 male and 3 female Lyretail Anthias
- 6 blue/green chromis
- Mated Pair of Tomato Clowns
- Midas Blenny
- Spotted Hawkfish
- 2 Firefish Gobies

I am QTing a small Desjardini and will hope to add another pair of Clowns and some wrasses. You gotta feed a lot and have a nice skimmer to keep aggression down.

I think you could get away with having a lot of nice fish in your tank! Just giving you some suggestions! :-)

Anyone think 36" is maybe a bit small for the foxface?

Since the tank is a cube it will be about 51" from corner to corner, so it does provide a longer run. Whether that is long enough I don't know.
