16g BB SPS cube

Nice job uhuru! I wouldn't change a thing and let it grow out. Should be really nice in a year or so. I'll be keeping tabs on it. :)

thanks slovan. No more changes on this tank, I'm just planning to sit back and enjoy from here on out. Next project is my 70g. Gotta order that spectra light soon...

Nice! I'm sure the 70 will be just as nice, if not better than this one. Can't wait to see the build thread on it.

You'll really like the Spectra. It looks awesome and is a great performer. Definitely has the wow factor to go along with it. :)

uhuru, you should update the thread here..:p...I've been following it over on Nano-Reef...how's the tank been doing?

I'm glad you posted your experience with the starboard. I wasn't planning on it for my new setup, and now I know I made the right choice...;)

If imitation is the biggest form of flattery, then you'll enjoy this...I've taken the best elements from your 16g BB setup and your 70 Shallow Cube and combined them. Scott is building me a 20x20x16H shallow cube. I can't wait to enter the nano game..:)

Thanks for the inspiration!

Definitely flattered! I look forward to seeing your build thread. Those dimensions are awesome.

The nano is doing much better, but still not fully recovered. I've had to run an extremely low nutrient tank in order to fight the cyano, resulting in very very pale SPS corals. Also as I mentioned in my NR thread I had tissue necropsis in my more vulnerable corals that were basically suffocated by the cyano. I think it will take months before I get the tank back in balance :(

I'd like to see a full tank shot (where you see the tank and stand) like in your first picture.

I like what I'm seeing. Was the tank made out of 1/2" acrylic?

It's actually 3/4" acrylic, thicker than my 70g tank LOL.

I need to let my corals recover a bit before I take more pics. Unless you don't mind seeing some very sad birdsnests...

Uhuru, why would you buy something that is completely overbuilt? ...........

Show us new pictures when you can. For now, the ones from your previous posts will be suffice. :)

if you dont mind, can you please post a exact measurement of the foot print on the Ex-1. I want to see if it will fit inside m 10 gallon sump.

thanks

I just picked one of these up for my 40g breeder.

The actual black ABS base measures 9"x7".

From pump to the opposite side where the standpipe (including the union) is about 15.5". It will fit in a 10g tank length wise (20Lx10Wx12H).

slovan, overbuilt?! he he that's what I love about this build...it's literally a "tank."

nothing like those 3/4" polished edges..;)

It is built like a tank but 1/4" acrylic would've done the job.

I remember seeing this tank as it was being built by ASD. I believe scott had 3/4" acrylic left over and was abuilt to build this tank cheaper by using leftover material.

I have a 24" x 24" x 16" acrylic rimless cube built by ASD that is 3/4" material. He does some amazing work.

James, I remember seeing your tank build thread, really enjoyed it, haven't seen new pics in a while though :)

Yes James, not to hijack uhuru's wonderful thread, but I completely agree...more pics plz!

Scott is finishing up my tank as we speak...can't wait!

Any updates on your tank uhuru? How's the 70 coming along?

I've been thinking of running zeovit on both tanks, this tank first using a small fluidized media reactor to hold the rocks. Even an HOB Aquaclear would work if I could somehow slow the flow down to 20-30 gph. I also added some live rock to the sump. I think it caused a little cycle because some of the cyano came back. I just think there is a major bacterial imbalance going on with this tank. Maybe I should try dosing Prodibio? Vodka?

Do you think the problem is inherent to trying to keep a nutrient rich enough environment for the sps while at the same time avoiding filter media of any kind...including excesses of LR that might otherwise trap detritus and lead to potential nitrate spikes?

I just think even if you have minimal live rock and tons of flow it could work against you. You could actually have the detritus circulating in the water column so much that it still breaks down in there and clogs up all the LR before you have a chance to siphon or skim it out. At that point you are in for a cyano or algae outbreak because you don't have enough biological filtration to handle it. Well even in a traditional tank this would happen just that it would take longer because more rock + the sand bed acts as a great buffer. For me it seemed like the cyano took over as the biological filter for the tank. I have reduced the flow and I don't point anything directly at the bottom. I let the detritus settle there rather than on the rocks so I can siphon it out easily. I guess it just takes experience for me to realize these things :) Along with that though I'm still concerned about not having enough biological filtration. I want to get back to feeding heavy and bringing the colors back on my corals without causing another cyano bloom!
