a modded maxi-jet seems to start more reliably, but if your Koralia is doing OK...then NBD. I have one that sems to restart fine, and another that it's sort of a toss-up.

I'll see if we have a maxi-jet kicking around somewhere, and try them both in the tank. I only have one koralia so its hard for me to make any assertions/assumptions since I just have the one.

What do you have in place for power outages? I pretty much can expect a 1-2 hour outage for a thunder storm, and a 2-6+ hour outage for big wind storms. Thankfully I've been at home for every storm we've had so far.

sorry about the stupid re-post. I was trying to edit.

I have UPS set up for my display controller, flow for the QT, etc. I have a generator standing by. I have the battery backups for my power heads in the display as well.

Because I have a sealed tank room and a very high volume of water, temperature is generally not a problem.

I don't worry that much about temperature, but its better to do it all up now, rather then forget in the future.

Once we get back to the condo this weekend we'll try out a few configurations of the koralia and maxijets and see what works best. I also can't wait to start building the sump!

The generator is the best back up you'll have if you have power outages of 6 hours often. I like the VorTechs because they run for 24 hours, which gives me plenty of time to get the generator going.

Our condo doesn't leave us the generator option, which is really unfortunate. Its actually forbidden by the condo by-laws because of excessive noise. However a generator is item #1 on our to buy for the house. The plan is to have the generator automatically come on and turn off in the event of an outage.

I've looked at the VorTechs (the MP40W), along with with a battery back up. Is the price really worth it? I'm looking at ~$750 for the powerhead, wireless driver, battery back up, plus shipping and taxes. I am honestly afraid of the price. I have also never seen one in person as they are all items that need to be ordered in.

I'm hoping I'll be able to see some things like the VorTechs at MACNA. There is just so much cool stuff that never makes it up to Canada that I'm dying to see.

Well I guess we may be getting a generator sooner then we though, and breaking our condo by-laws too! Our utility company has just informed us that we requested our services cancelled effective the 15th. Um no we didn't ask for any service cancellation...someone wasn't paying attention at the utility company and didn't make sure they were looking at the right account. Seriously, can't wait for a house with a big tank and a big fish room!

Clearly not....Kevin is glad I have practice tonight, so I can "go beat on other girls and get my anger out". I laughed at him...

Utility company is supposed to have a Stupervisor call me back tonight...I am guessing no call with be forthcoming. Connection time after disconnection is on average 7-10 business days. Which for obvious reasons are totally unacceptable. I am angling for 10% off our bills for the next 6 months, plus $0 reconnection, which will be done before the end of the week.

It is a lot of money, granted. Personally, I love them. Easy to clean, provides flow beautifully without a lot of real estate taken up, uses very low power consumption (3 on my reef costs me less than $6 per month), and runs when the power is out.

I wish they were less expensive, but that wasn't my call. ;)

Let us know what happens with your power woes.

Dear Utility Company,

I win, you suck!

No love,

Me

I gave up fighting with our utility company. The supervisor who called me back was utterly useless and couldn't understand that I didn't cancel our utilities. I even faxed over our telephone and cellphone bills from the date everything was cancelled to prove it wasn't us. The company continued to insist that I had called in from our home number to cancel our services. Needless to say the conversation did not end on a high note.

Power is supposed to go out here around noon, so in 4 hours. We borrowed a generator from my parents and have it hooked up to power the tank, TV, internet, and fridge. We got special permission from our condo manager to do so. I don't know what will happen next.

Options are:
1) Force current utility company to reconnect services. We still have the stupid 7-10 day reconnection to deal with, plus the cost of reconnection.
2) Take the opportunity to move our services elsewhere. There may also be a few days delay.

Some good things though are that the condo manager is now involved and she apparently has some pull at this particular utility company. She said she would try and make some calls on our behalf this morning. I'll post more of an update when I can.

At least this morning when I got home the tank is okay, fish are out and happy. I got an email about our lighting order, free shipping and 10% off to compensate for the error. Things are somewhat shaping up at least!

I may have made the supervisor cry.... I acknowledge that I am not a kind person when stupidity is involved, and a lack of an ability to admit an error. Quick way to solve this should have been, "I'm sorry we made an error, we will cancel the disconnect of your services immediately. Please accept 10% off this months bill for the error. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention so quickly, and we will make notes on the account to double check any future cancellations."

Anyways I'm looking around locally to see if anyone has a VorTech on their tank that I could go see. I want to see them in person before I commit to buy. Are there usually good sales to go along with MACNA? Should I just wait until then to buy, or should I bite the bullet sooner rather then later?

I hope your electricity thing is resolved quickly. It's one thing to lose power because you couldn't pay the bill on time, it's another thing for them to pull the plug and accuse you.

So often now-a-days, they state they are recording the conversations to 'train our employees' - so if they feel you made the cancellation call, ask them to provide the recording immediately, or restore power before you have to take legal action.

I'm assuming your LFS doesn't have a VorTech on display? It's way more fun to buy it at MACNA, to be honest. Plus you'll be right in the midst of all the vendors, and can ask the hard questions face to face.
