180 Gal Inwall project begins

Well, I was off work yesterday (and again today) but we were able to get the old tank inhabitants moved into the new tank! It was quite an ordeal, and unfortunatly lost our blue eyed anthias. So far (lights haven't come on) I haven't seen either of the purple firefish (2) or the yellow wrasse. None of them usually come out before the lights go on anyway, so hopefully the next hour will show promise. Pictures on the way....

ceiling is closed in, we figured the halides would have caused some weird shadows on the vaulted ceiling. We still have the dilema of the front opening. I built it with about 12" of opening and we're still trying to work out what we're going to put there. Andrea wants a crown molding/fireplace mantle look, I was thinking about trim around the whole tank, with a trimed door that opens with a top hinge. we're still trying to hash that out, but that's really a minor issue. We agree on the tank and its inhabitants and that is what really matters.

Ok, here's the first pic of our new setup. Coral placement isn't set in stone yet, but you get the gist of it. The rockwork is pretty close to what we want, but are going to add a couple of rocks here and there to fill in some dead/low spots.

And here is one of our fav corals, it's similar to the scrips (sp) milli, but didn't get it from there. We are calling it the LE Pili Milli.

Dennis/Andrea,
Looking good. Great thread.

Andrea...good to see you at Oceans floor the other day. Don't worry lionfish are hard to bag...safely... :D

The frag I got of your "LE Pili Milli" is really starting to take off, as well as the Orange Digi.

You were right about the turquoise stag, holy slow grower.

Thanks and I'll be following along.

Nice job.

Tom

I think I was there to witness this... :D

Very amusing. I can understand her apprehension though. :D

Tabeaubi, so far you're the only one that we've fragged that for. We did however break a couple pieces off while moving the mother colony, and they now reside at Ocean's Floor. Dave was drooling over the colony when he had come by to help with the inwall.

Andrea told me about the lionfish, with a difficult fish and an audience she was a little nervous :P

Hi Dennis and Andrea,

The tank looks great. Where did you get the hang on box in the picture? This could help in my hopes to grow my hammer coral buds.

Thanks,
Brian

thats just a specimen container, i think we picked it up on a trip out to deep reef aquatics in Downers grove. A lot of LFS' carry them or can easily get one for you.

MICRO BUBBLES:furious:

I am just about ready to throw my hands up and call it quits!!!

Everything is up and running and yet we cannot get rid of these freaking bubbles. We have tried just about everything that we could think of. We are beginning to wonder if maybe this sump cannot handle the flow.
:(

Had to step away from it for a little while!!!

Andrea

I was never a big fan of them until it cured my micro bubble issue...filter socks! Now filter sock changing is just part of my many reef routines and the reef is better off IMO as well.

you know.... if it weren't such a pain in the butt changing and cleaning micron bags it wouldn't be such a big deal. Right now I'm all for it, but Andrea's biggest concern is a spike in phosphates and having to go through the hassle of changing them. BUT.... it might be our only option.

Dennis and Andrea,

I have to say that you both have a beautiful set-up. You both have done a great job and I hope that I will be over soon to enjoy the product your hard work. Folks.......this tank is a dream tank and I highly suggest taking a ride out to visit this tank if you are looking for frags or just looking to see what a great SPS tank looks like. Congrats again!

Just keep that phosban reactor going and keep on top of the micron bag/sock/filter pad changes and you both will be set to go. You both seem to know what you are doing and have envested to much time and money to quit now.......LOL! LMK if you ever need a hand with anyting Dennis. I am right around the corner from you both!

Happy Holidays!

AJ

Im with Andrea on the filter sock. I hate the things. Not only do they trap the detritus (a good thing), but they have a lot of water passing over/through the detritus causing it to become a disolved organic. Its pretty tough to remove disolved organics. Skimmers cant do it, and it wont be filtered out of the water by the animals. Detritus on the other hand is easily removed by a good skimmer and many animals feed on it.

Im not really familiar with your sump, but maybe some rock rubble in stratigic areas to break up the bubbles, and also a little time might help. (Bacteria coating things )

I know its a little late, but I would have used a 4' sump for a 180. There are some nice, cheap (comparitivly (sp?) designs out there that incorporate a 4' tank (75 gal).
