180 gallon tank build

Ok, I spelled the word 'there' wrong. This is a big pet-peve of mine. Along with the mis-spelling of alot (a lot) and your (you're).

I'll post pictures of my progress on the stand tomorrow.

Well, I feel accomplished today. I went to Home Depot this morning to get some supplies. I got a couple conectors for my rodi unit. it is now up and running. Then I got some lumber to build the stand for the sump and refugium. I started on the bottom frame. It was a lot more than I had anticipated. I will continue progress later tonight or tomorrow.

Mike,

This picture should be used by bio teachers in school to show that Aquariums are way better than watching TV.

Here is a picture of Spencer being mezmorized by the 30g. I'm starting him young!!!

I think I will attemp building a full power station just like the one Melev has. It makes shuting indiviual stuff off simple. You may want to do the same.

It's gotten to the point now that when Spencer is crying, he will only stop if we set him in front of the tank.

Are you talking about a seperate electric box or something else?

:D Great picture. if a cute little guy like Spencer was sitting in front of the tank,it would be hard not to watch him instead of the aquarium. You are a lucky guy.

Ellery, thanks for the link. Very informational, but a bit more than I'd like to bite off right now. How's your bird by the way?

tmz- Thank you... I feel lucky and blessed with a great life and a wonderful, supportive and caring family!!!

I just finished my stand. I know that it doesn't look like much, but I am very proud of myself. I've never built anything before. It now awaits the sump. I asked this question in my "Bulkhead" thread; do I absolutely need baffels? I have heard that they are such a pain to put in. The sump is glass by the way.

Hi Mike, Your sump stand looks great, pretty soon you will be building stands and furniture keep up the good work. I will be looking for more pictures.

Mike- I would silicon at least one glass baffle into your sump. If you get a piece of glass that's cut to the correct dimensions it's a very simple job to silicon it into place.

Things are looking good!

I can't tell from the picture of your sump stand, but it appears as if the load from the sump will rely only on the screws attaching the top platform to the legs.

You may want to get some added peace of mind by attaching a 2x4 to the outside of each leg from top to bottom. That way, the platform will be resting on a 2x4 rather than relying on the sheer strength of the screws.

I'm watching this thread closely as I'll be putting a similar sized tank in my classroom this summer.

Considder it done!! If I'm up to it, I'll do it in a little bit (have to finish my bloody mary and beer first :D )

By the way, congratulations on your grant!! I'm excited to see your tank build ;)

Thanks

I will go to Home Depot this weekend and see about getting some glass cut. Does it have to be glass or can I silicone acrylic to glass? I assume acrylic will be cheaper?

Thanks

acrylic won't bond to glasss as well as glass will. I don't know what types of glass Home Depot offers. Make sure not to get thin glass. You might need to go to a glass specilaty place to get some thicker glass that won't break.

Ah but GE has come to our rescue Gary. They have a new silicone out that is designed to bond glass to acrylic :D. You can typically find this in the acrylic section at HD/Lowes, and if not there, in the silicones area. It's in a red tube I know that much :)

I reinforced the top frame of the sump/refugium stand tonight with vertical 2x4's and a horrizontal brace going accross the width. I am very happy with it's outcome. Next will be baffels and finding a circle drill bit to do the drains.
