180 Reef Upgrade

Well usually I use them to keep detritus suspended, but yes filter sock helps with that.

Still it helps mix water around for different things. Caeto gets tumbled a bit and all parts of it get steady flow. Heaters get in contact with more water, so does the skimmer.

There are some fish and shrimp in the sump too, so their waste needs to be suspended.

Finally breaks water surface so no proteins collect up there.

And even further, I have plenty of extra power heads, so at least some needs to be put to use :)

That is what the sock does.

....No this is not what a sock does. A socks purpose is to screen. Anything that gets past the screen ends up settling on the floor of the sump. By using a powerhead to keep that material in the water column it will have a chance to be screened the next time though or removed by other filtration mechanisms.....

Nice going so far.
Your stand is 2x6 across the top? Did you get any sagging when adding all the water & rock? I am in the middle of my 180 upgrade. And Have read numerous stand threads.. All which advice to use 2x8 with no center brace for 180 & up. I would prefer to use 2x6 like I used on my 125 with no center brace as well.
Thank for any input ,
And thanks for the Thread

I used 2x8. There were no sagging... but I don't see how that would even happen. Corners are where most of the load is, if cross beam would sag that would mean the tank did too and glass does not bend that way :)

I would imagine 2x6 is fine, especially if you skin it with plywood around. Don't call me for water clean up with 2x6 doesn't work out though :) For me extra 2" lost in the opening were not a big deal since my stand is 4 feet tall, but I see how trying to go with 2x6 would be beneficial for something half that height etc.

Slowly progressing through post upgrade things. Almost everything is done now. I've made doors yesterday, just have to give them another coat of polyurethane. Trim on the stand is installed as well, although that it just raw wood. Will have to apply some sort of protection to it while it's on the tank. PU would be best, but I'm not sure I want to do it with open water right there possibly absorbing fumes.

Anyways, few shots of the sump for now.

Sump - Right side

Sump - Left side

DIY sock holder. Unions easily detach, pipes come out, holder slides from under the pipes and I can pull it out.

DIY top off with a simple float valve. A small pumps comes on few times a day to top off with RO water.

DIY doser tube holder - Ca, Alk, Mg

DIY probe holder

DIY sump lights for chaeto - 16 Cree XM-L U2 with 40 degree optics

And a quick shot of the tank

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I would've bought non DIY things, but they all seem to suck and are not very flexible in positioning. So for much less I can just make what fits my situation instead :)

Canon T2i with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens.

From canon lens line up that is probably the best value for macro. You can go with L version of the 100mm, but will cost almost twice more. And the 180mm L is close to triple.

Extenders I would avoid for this probably or at least try it out at some camera store to make sure you like the results as it will reduce image clarity as well increase minimum aperture.

Other lenses I use are EF 50mm f/1.4 USM and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM. Both are fairly cheap and offer good quality for the price.

All lenses have B+W 58mm Clear UV Haze with Multi-Resistant Coating filters for extra protection :)

Good to know. I will look into those as well. The reason I looked at the D40 was that I may buy my sisters fairly cheap.

awesome pics. love the macro shots. i got a steal off craigslist for my camera. canon 30d with sigma 28-70mm len(does ok) with 6 batteries and some extra for $300. all it needs is a macro len.
