there is another fast moving thread I'm thinking of that you have no problem following ;) it is easier when waiting for mermaid pics i suppose...

OK, guys. Need your help to figure out what this stuff on my sand is, how I got it, and how I can get rid of it. It looks like a brown, hairy algae

I've tried vacumming the sand, but it comes back. Am I feeding too much?

Water params:
Temp 78-79
Ca 420
Alk 9
Mg 1300
Nitrates zero
PO4 0.02 (hannah)

DSCN3166.jpg

looks like standard cyano...

with your nitrates 0 and your phos so low its hard to believe you have it...

i had the same issue though...

zero nitrates, minimal phosphates, tons of flow... the stuff was blowing in the flow...

i talked to some people and it was decided that it was just another stage in tank developement... i used "red slime control", and it hasn't been back since...

Perhaps. My tank is still young. It's not red in color though. Looks brown. I used to have a diamond goby who has not been seen for a few weeks now. Without him stirring the sand, I've been getting this brown growth on my sand.

It can't be a flow issue because I have a hammer almost on the sand bed and it sways nicely.

So if it's just a stage, does that mean I have to wait it out? Nothing I can do to eradicate it? I've had red cyano in my last tank, and this is definitely not that, so I don't want to use the "red slime control"

Is my only option to keep it under control by continued vacuuming? Would feeding less do anything?

i had the same thing in first few months of the build, so im thinking its normal. also in the beginning had ton of algae growing all over the back, rocks and etc. so i read up couple of threads seen how some peoples turn off the lights for 3 whole days out of the each month. this procedure work for me when build was started. so you know every tanks is different too.

i just added sand back into my tank and it really looks great.

with that much flow how did that work out?

tbone, i just remembered another reason why i went BB, i freaking hated that my sand was white for only a little while till it was dirty again.

oh that reminds me, i am so happy i found this thread in time...i was hella rushing because i dont exactly know when the backups are going to come up and i forgot where i found this thread the first time!!

I had this problem as well with my 37g. There was red algae all over the rocks and crushed coral would vacuum and then 3 or 4 days later it would come back. Never could figure out what it was.

its interesting i have a lil mountain under the vortech because of the vortech undertow effect

and i have a bare spot in the center that i filled with coral, otherwise its all good :)

Bart - I've read that thread about "3-day blackouts". How would that affect all the coral I have in my tank?

Mooo - Many people go barebottom for the easier maintenance, but I love the look of sand, so I don't think I will ever go BB

GSM - good to know that it will go away

I guess the only thing I can do now is to keep the sand stirred. I'm looking for a dragon gobie. What do you guys think about Cucs and sand-sifting stars?

terry just got done checking out ur build super nice man great job very clean look you should be proud of the results. very impressed.

haha ohhh dont worry, with all theses threads on BAR talking about reef addicts. i think i know.

be careful with some of those gobies, my friend had a diamond goby which took some sand up about half way and drop it then power head did the rest. my corals wasn't effected by the 3 day blackout or you can try 2 day instead. this is done every month in my display for past 4 months and no problems, also as you might know we do occasionally get rain and storm in the ocean :D.

As Bart said. i would also be careful about adding any kind of sand sifting goby. They will be making holes in your sand, throwing all the sand on your rocks and your corals. You are better off with some conches ( i prefer the strawberry conches), a bunch of nassarius snails and if you like, some sea cuccumber like the tiger tail of black one... Those will take care real good of your sand bed.
