2 different clowns in the same tank

I agree...I was told from one of my LFS that I could put two different kinds of clowns in my tank. So I went with an Ocellaris first. I waited a few months and then added a fire clown (much smaller than the ocellaris). Didn't work. The fire clown took over, and was beating the ocellaris every chance he got. I got rid of him quickly, and got a second ocellaris. Now I can't seperate them.

I have a maroon (white stripe) and a false percula... Some aggression for a while but the percula found my frogspawn and just stays there most of the time (except feeding)! Not really any aggression after about 2 weeks and it was just a little chasing to start with! Had them for over a year now.

I would try getting a pair of black and white occelaris + reg pair of occelaris. Has work for a few people I know.

Some people have short term success mixing, but when they mature you'll most likely have a problem.

I have a black and white occelaris and a True percula in the same tank and they do fine.... There are a few that you can keep in the same tank... I also know of someone that has a pair of tomato clowns and a pair of occelaris in the same tank and they have no problems.... Really depends on if you get them young and introduce together.... also hit and miss sometimes...

i'd say no also. i recently had to seperate my clowns. i had a pair of true and a pair of false percula's in a 150. even with all that room, they would fight like crazy.

stick to the same breed of clowns. why do we have to experiment. even if others have a "success" in putting 2 diff breeds still we don't know if within the 24hours parameter there is no aggressions between them. we're here to enjoy the tank and let us not forget that our fishes have to enjoy our tank too.

People seem to want this hobby to grow but not to experiment....

How do you know that putting 2 different breeds together will not work?

Have you done it?

If not what are you going by to say it will not work?

People say tangs need 6ft tanks to be happy...... I have kept them in 4 ft tanks and they are happy and fat...

What does the extra 2 feet do?

They swim back and forth in 6 ft just as much as in a 4 ft.....

Things will not move ahead in the hobby if we do not experiment

I don't see how producing unnatural hybrids is going to help the hobby "get ahead." If anything, it will set us back, and could eventually result in the loss of the natural holotype for future generations.

Any person off the street can breed and sell clownfish, and it's possible that these hybrids could resemble one holotype or another enough to be sold as such.

Plus, say some well-meaning, but undereducated, person decides that they don't want to keep their hybrid clowns anymore and tosses them back into the ocean (it happens.) This hybrid clown becomes an invasive species, and in a couple thousand years that's all there is.

Drastic scenarios, yes, but entirely reasonable. We've seen species eliminated by the introduction of hybrids or non-native species countless times before.

I don't call this progress, keep the genetically bastardized fish in the freshwater trade, please.
