2 maroon clownfish in nano tank

Ok... I know that I did a stupid thing! I put 2 maroon clowns in a 10g nano tank... My LFS told me it was fine, and my other 2 kids 10g have percula clowns for a year now living happily together, so I didn't see a difference in the "maroon" color. I should have researched more... ANYWAYS! It has only been a day and one is nipping at the other. I have a 45 gallon with about 70lbs of live rock and 3" deep sand bed. In it, I have a flame angel, 2 yellow coral gobies, 2 engineer gobies, 1 ocellaris clown, 1 algae blennies, and 2 pajama cardinals. Do you think I can put one of the maroon clowns in there? Do you think he will eventually beat up some of the other fish? Will the other one be okay in the nano tank? I am at a loss of what to do now. Please help!

It will for sure kill the ocellaris, but other then that it can live in your other tank just fine.

that's what I was afraid of... I've had the ocellaris for about 4 yrs now, and I do not want anything to happen to him... the maroon is still a baby.... will he still kill the ocellaris when he matures? Do you think ONE maroon can live in a nano?

Don't expect the "nipping" to stop just because you put them in the 45 gallon tank. It will continue until they either pair up, or the smaller one dies. Maroons aren't "friendly" clowns.

That being said, I think you need to move the maroons simply because a 10 gallon tank is nowhere near large enough for a single maroon, much less two. A mature female maroon will start out at about 2.5 inches, and can get to 5 inches in pretty short order. My females have always been about 3-4 inches within about 6 months of becoming female.

I know this sounds stupid, but I don't want to upset my ocellaris since he has been in the larger tank for about 4 yrs now... don't really want to move him to a nano by himself... maybe if I could find him an anemone or coral to be happy with in the nano? He pretty much stays in his little corner in the larger tank anyways.... Would 2 maroons get too big for a 45 gallon? Should I just try and trade them in??? Thanks for your help!!!

+1 on the ocellaris being fine in the nano tank. But IMO, you already have a fairly large bioload of fish in your 45gal tank (& engineer gobies can reach over 1 1/2 feet in length). Adding 2 more fish that can get large & are aggressive may not be a good idea. If the fin nipping gets worse, or you see some other damage, I'd bring one of the maroons back for store credit. btw, what size are the maroons now & are you seeing any of the submissive shaking behavior by one of them when it's getting nipped at?

How about asking LFS for store credit for the maroons & get a small ocellaris to pair with existing occy? If it's been alone in your tank for 4 years, it's probably a female by now. & ocellaris are much easier to pair up (not nearly as aggressive as maroons either). Good luck!

Solves all the problems brought up by everyone.
