2 TUNZE 6000 ok for 92g?

i'm thinking of ordering 2 TUNZE 6000 w/ multicontroller to replace my 6 MJ1200's. my current turnover rate w/ return pump and powerheads is about 30X. once i replace 4 of the 6 MJ1200's w/ 2XTUNZE 6000's(i am leaving 2 MJ1200's in facing towards back corners), i'll be at about 64X turnover. that's more than double the current turnover rate. tank is 3 yrs old so i'm not worried about a sandstorm, just worried about shocking SPS and a few LPS w/ that much of an increase. i may start w/ just 1 and after a week or 2 add the other. should i be ok. i want to get my flow perfect before i really start adding alot more SPS frags and a new RBTA.

DMK,

I asked a similar question on the Tunze board. However, I have a 72 gallon reef with three MJ1200 on a reef keeper that alternates all three, two at the same time every 6 minutes.

My return pump is the Mag1200.

I wanted to get the Tunze 6000 or 6100 with single controllor. He told me that the 6000 is perfect, it's like adding another 4 to 6 MJ 1200.

He said if I get the 6100 it's way overkill; and that with the 6000 if I find it's too strong I can dial it down.

I have ordered the 6000 it's due to arrive then I could tell you if I need more power; remember you can convert the 6000 to a 6100 for only 70 bucks later; just purchase the transformer.

With the 6000, I would have a turnover rate of about 53x.

Have you posted over on Tunze forum? He responds pretty quick, I'd like to see what he says.

So how many MJ1200 did you say you have? Six? I have three and notice that I could use more. Do yours alternate? Are they bouncing off the glass walls?

you'll be fine with the 6000's

I have 2 of em in my 72 bow and they're cranked up all the way and i have a SSB to boot! no problems at all
in fact, ive considered upgrading the transformer to make em 6100's for MORE flow as my tank starts to grow

I use two 6Ks on my 90 AGA reef-ready tank. The only issue is one of getting the direction of flows correct to avoid blowing sand around, but the age of your sand should help (somewhat).

jcraft,

I'm curious since we have the same tank, do you have any MJ1200's along with those two 6000 Tunzes?

What is your return pump rated at GPH after head pressure?

My sand bed is really settled; 7 months, in the beginnng it used to fly all over the place.

I might as well get the 6100 if you think the two 6000 were not enough.

Can you chime in?

Bobb, can I ask you the similiar question, do you feel the two 6K are enough or do you want more?

the 2 Streams are the only powerheads in the display along with the return that pumps out about 550gph

my sandbed is about 1.5" and truth be told, it did go everywhere in the beginning but I have since arranged them so there is no sand being blown anywhere. I've had the streams in there since the 1st of the year and the tanks been set up since July.

The reason I MAY upgrade in the future is because as the coral grows, it will impede on the flow . . . right now I think the flow is adequate, but once they get big enough the extra flow will be wanted im sure by some of the SPS in the middle

here's a pic of how the streams are situated:

Jcraft,

Wow your tank rocks, I totally love your reef building skills. Looks right out of a reef book.

How did you color up your background, is it black? I know that the overflow is black but the rest of the tank should be glass, I've never seen it colored?

Jcraft,

Here is a pic of my 72 oceanic bowfront; should I stick with the 6000 or get the 6100?

Where should I place it?

Sorry to hijack your thread, OP

As far as where to place it, looking at the aquascape and what you have in there, you might be better off with a couple of SEIO 820's or 1100's than a Stream.
You're sanbed is a good deal deeper than mine, so if you still get a stream the 6000 will be sufficient- also keep in mind that many Softies will not be able to tolerate high flow- they generally prefer slow to medium water movement.
As far as placement, best bets are to either put it in the back corner and angle it towards the front glass or to put it in the front corner and angle it across the front side of the tank.

DMK,

If you are worried about to much flow with twin 6000's don't. I run them in a 72g along with a 6060. One of these days I'm going to kick the 6000's up to 6100's. IME LPS and stuff like mushrooms can thrive in a lot more current than some think. I used to run a bunch of MJ's like you are doing now and never came close to the current of the 3 streams. Just don't point them directly at anything. Deflect off the glass or something. As far as acclimating SPS or LPS to the new current I wouldn't bother just crank it all up and adjust. Everything in my tank including fish seems to love the current.

They produce more than enough flow for my reef.

I have 2 6100's in my 90 gal; if you are worried about flow, turn it down. That way if you ever get the upgrading itch, you will not have to upgrade the streams as well.
