2 x Giganteas in NJ lfs

I just got home from a lfs here in Jersey on my search for a Ritteri but what I found was a purple and a neon green/yellow Giganteas. The purple looks in better shape but I'm more interested in the other one. I was there for about an hour starring at it and it didn't deflate. By the looks of it would you buy it or is it not looking to good? Thanks in advance

i think you are right, the purple appear to look better. if you have cipro or Fishflox on hand, i would buy the purple.

if it were me, i buy the nem first, then ask questions later :)

Thanks but for $250 each I think I'll ask questions first...lol

I have cipro but I'm only interested on the green/yellow one.

I get both. But treat them separate. Both seem to very salvageable especially if you are ready to treat right away.

I'm not sure how long they've been there but I'm going back tomorrow and I'll find out more info. I'll take a few more shots tomorrow

got excited saw you were in NJ, but im closer to philly you are wayyyy up north.
There's a place in PA that has tons of mag/ritteri, but they are gonna need some love. a few were inflated and others deflated as heck. some $199, some $150.

Here's the info if you dont mind the ride:

Captain Nemo's
Aquarium Superstore
2876 Dekalb Pike
East Norriton PA 19401
(610) 239 - 1645

EDIT: I was just there saturday by the way, they had maybe 10.

That's high for a Mag ain't it? I can get them here weekly for $60

Thanks for the info. I'm about 2 hours from you. I think I might just wait for my local petco to receive a healthy Ritteri. I spoke to the person in charge and she said they might receive 3 this Friday. Thanks for all your help guys. I'm still on a hunt

Most stores here won't even order you one. My fish stores that are actually LOCAL are pretty crappy. This ones an hour away from me but good prices on everything but them (probably due to survival rates). These ones are frigging massive though. Probably 14-16inches on the big ones.

But I agree, highway robbery.

I really think buying gigs from a LFS is a crap shoot. It really can go either way in terms of getting them to survive. No matter how many questions are asked, we don't know how long they've in transit -- how many days the collector had it, the exporter, the importer, and finally the LFS. We don't know what they were exposed to or how they were handled.

In terms of cost, though green ones are seen less frequently, they're typically cheaper than blues and purples. If it looks yellow, it's most likely a bleached green one. The tan ones are always the cheapest. Sometimes you get lucky and they refract light, making them appear multi-color.

Gigs rarely deflate, so it would be a rare occasion to see one deflate in front of you, unless of course, they're in terrible shape. If it were to deflate, the chances of survival are even less, due to the fact that you know that it's already sick and dying. You would need to start Cipro treatment right away. I firmly believe from first hand experience and from following other people's threads, that if gigs don't show signs of improvement in the first few days, they don't make it.

In terms of magnifica, the common color (reddish brown base, not magenta or purple or red) shouldn't be more than $100. I remember seeing them on wholesale lists for about $30. That said, any healthy mag is worth whatever premium you want to pay for it. Regarding these particular mags, if they're all together in a tank and some are deflated, we can assume that they're all exposed to the same pathogen/infection.

Yeah these were reddish brown base, purple tentacles, yellow tips. I don't doubt the markup is insane around here. Pretty much have a manopoly over there. Funny thing is tho they had a tank of "ritteri" for 150, and a tank of "magnifica" for $199. Guess they didn't get the meno on the name change.

As far as pathogens oh yeah they are all doomed the same fate unless treated. That's why I said they would need some love. All boils down to if you wanna pay the cost I guess.

I dont mind if the LFS charges a lot for good merchandise. In this case, if the LFS held the mags in QT and treated them until they were better, they could probalbly sell them for a couple hundred bucks. In this case, if they end up selling two at the price they're asking, they cover costs. Imagine how much they could make if they QTed them properly and they all recovered! Another option for the LFS would be to keep a couple on the sales floor, and QT the rest in a back room.

Sorry, I didn't mean to de-rail the thread. But the same can happen with gigs. If the LFS treats them and they recover, they can make more money. However, it makes sense to move out them as soon as possible.

To the OP: what kind of mag are you looking for? Any particular color?
