200 DD 2x Upgrade Build

Hi OrrG, love the set up! especially with the basement, man im soooo envious! they dont have basements here in Dubai. Also used to live in NorthOlmstead bout 5 years ago :)

anyways i have a question and i do appologize if its remedial. I think the above pics show your return and overflow if im not correct. if the power goes out, lets say, how does your system stop the water from backflowing from your return spout in the tank back to whatever its connected to? ie refugium??

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the kind words. I drilled two 1/8" holes in each section of Loc-Line just below the water level. As soon as the water starts draining the holes are exposed to the air and break the siphon. My sump is big enough to hold the excess water that drains down. If you are planning a sump make sure it can hold a few extra gallons of water just in case. Do you have a tank set up yet or still planning?

Tank has been up for 3 weeks now and I got a small green algae bloom but other than that things are going good. All the fish are happy and most SPS survived the transfer. I ended up doing it all in one day, started at 10am and finished at 10pm. I nuked one of my favorite pieces of sps but hopefully it will recover, these Radiums blow away my old Powermodule. I'm loving the halides that's for sure, the shimmer and shadows they create just can't be beat. I hope to get ahold of my dad's camera to get some nice pics of the tank but for now I have some sump pics.

I moved all the corals downstairs at first and then moved them up to the display tank day by day as I figured out where I wanted them.

I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with this tank. I originally was going to do the whole frag tank with eggcrate thing but now I'm thinking a shallow reef display. I know which corals I really love at this point and those are going to go in the display tank but I may have a small section for frags when the sps start growing out. Maybe a BTA or carpet, I'm not sure yet. Any ideas???

Looking sharp, can't wait to see some corals in the display. Will have to come out there one of these days.

da-yang..... oh for the record before i looked up the dems of the 200DD, i so called 4ftx3ft LOL. anyways it looks sweet great build!

Thanks guys! I'm loving the 3 foot depth, all my rock is a good 6 inches off the back glass, plenty of swimming room and no dead spots.

My canopy is basically done, just need to put it back together and wire up the T5's, should have some good pics this weekend. I'm finally going to get my doors on and trim work up too.

Overall things are going good. My white rock isn't so white anymore, it's a nice shade of brown and green so I ordered some snails from Reefs2go to help with the diatoms and algae. Coraline is starting to explode in my frag tank downstairs and I'm hoping it makes it's way up to the display soon. My SPS hate me. I lost 2 and a couple others are brown or pale. I'm hoping they will make a turnaround when things get more stable and mature. I'll get some pics up of the display anyways though.

I love the setup and nice rock work!

A couple of random questions for you: I noticed that you are using 2 x 250W lighting plus some T5s and LEDs, how do you find light coverage/intensity etc. with this... I have always used the rule that a MH is good for a 2'x2' area... since the tank is a bit more than that, I was curious about it.

Second, with that large of an area and 3 MP40s, do you like the amount of flow in the DT?

Thanks man. I spent more time on the rock drilling and test fitting it than I will ever admit to!

Right now I am still only using the 2 halides ghetto rigged to a 2 x 4 while I finish up my canopy. The coverage is great, no complaints, I could get away with just running the halides with how I planned out my coral placement. The intensity on the other hand is almost too much right now. I have the reflectors 8" off the surface from the lip and I think I should have really light acclimated my SPS more to these lights.

The left and right rock formations are directly under the reflectors and from the reviews and tests Sanjay did the Elite's have a major hot spot directly underneath and this is very true. I think I really nuked some of my acros even though I stated off at 6 hours a day. I had my Powermodule 4" from the surface on my 90G and my Slimer hit the surface of the water and other SPS weren't far away either so I didn't think it would be an issue but aparently it was. I bleached a few and others still aren't looking so hot. Maybe it was a combination with the tank move too, who knows. I'm waiting a few more months before any more SPS get added.
LPS and clams are happy as can be though.

As far as flow goes the 3 MP40's are the perfect amount of flow for now. I have the 2 on each short side facing each other on reefcrest anti-sync and the other centered on the back glass on lagoon random. All are at 100%. I left the tank very open and my rock is 6" off the back glass so there really are no dead spots.

I should have some pics of the finished product up soon.

Great job on that canopy. I still have to build mine. Any chance you have some details/pics of the build? Thanks!!

I didn't take any pics of the progress of the canopy but I can tell you what I did. It's pretty much a 1 x 2 pine frame screwed together, it's light weight but sturdy. The panels are oak frames and the inside edge is routed out so the 1/4" oak laminated plywood sits inside. The front panel is the only one that opens, it's on a hinge screwed into the top piece of 1 x 2 and swings up. Holes were cut out for the fans and the panels got screwed into the frame. The top is 1/4" plywood. The brackets and reflectors for the lights are all screwed into the pieces of 1 x 2 pine. I know this explanation sucks so PM if you have any questions on it.

I'm pretty much done with the stand and canopy and can relax for a while and enjoy the tank but I have 2 issues. First, I went with hidden hinges and the center piece is a 1 x 8 and I come to find out I should have used a 1 x 10 so I need to stain and poly one up and get it installed to get rid of the gaps by the doors. Second, I need some trim for the front canopy panel so it doesn't look like a huge sheet of plywood. Other than that I'm happy with the finished product.
