May - Water Testing Forum
This forum/workshop will be led by Rich Van Dusen & myself. Bring your tank water, and even your makeup water if you want it tested. We will have a large collection of various test kits, digital readers, and so on. We will look at the discrepancies between the kits, and I think some of you will be surprised to find out how accurate that $15 test kit you picked up a Petco really is. If you have a swing arm hydrometer it will give you a chance to calibrate it against a refractometer. This should be a very informative meeting, hands-on type meeting.

June - Dr. Frank Marini (Fish Breeding)
Frank Marini was born and raised in Hudson Mass. After high school he joined the Army and moved to Ft. Benning GA to complete his Military education. Four years later he returned to Massachusetts to attend and complete college. In 1989 he moved to Houston TX to begin his graduate training in Molecular Biology at the University of Texas.

From the start, fish, and fish tanks have always intrigued me. My parents setup my first tank, a 30gal metal-framed glass box containing seahorses when I was 12, I was hooked from that day on. Since then, I've kept a number of different fish and have always focused on predatory and unusual fish. I started my first reef tank in 1986, and my first large fish only in 1989. I fell hard for the banggai cardinal fish in 1995, and after solving the mating issues had multiple successful breedings. I have been credited with having the first reported breeding of these fish and successfully raising the fry. In 1997, I scaled up my banggai production and was able to supply over 300 banggai fry to local Houston pet stores. I continued banggai breeding for a few years thereafter, but again have refocused on predatory fish (mainly the scorpionfish family: lionfish, etc).

For the past years I've been a vocal proponent of keeping Fish Only tanks and expounding the merits of keeping large visually stunning fish. I've had the opportunity to breed a number of ornamental fish and in collaboration with Martin Moe wrote a series of articles on fish breeding for the home hobbyist in the online publication Advanced Aquarist. I currently moderate one of the largest forums on home ornamental breeding called The Fish Breeding Forum at www.Reefcentral.com, and frequently contribute to topics in both reef fish and Aggressive fish forums. I am also moderate the new Marine Fish - Reproduction, Care and Husbandry forum as part of Team Marine Depot at www.MarineDepot.com/forums.

Mark, I posted this in another thread were this months meeting came up.

I'm interested in seeing some of the results from this next meeting. I honestly don't think my swing arm is all that off, but everytime I use it I know how off it can be. I may even make up a few blind test samples. If you guys want I can make up a few standards for nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, ammonia, and calcium.
-

I can make these standards with blind results and give away the true values at the end.

right on david!~) i am liking you more and more with each one of your posts!~) i am picking up what you are putting down my brother!~)

!~)

David-

That would be great, thanks. I assume that you would be using lab grade stuff to verify the blinds? I think people would be shocked after they see how innacurate the hobbyists grade tests are.

In regards to the whole swing arm versus refractometer debate. I had used a swing hydrometer for eight or nine years. It should all of my tanks dead on at 1.025, and I was careful to take care of it, clean it with vinegar, etc. I finally broke down and bought a refractometer...I calibrated it and used it across my tanks. It showed my SG at 1.018! I confirmed this reading with two refractometers that Shawn had. I would never go back to a swing arm.

What really made me question my swing arm was last weekend I finally got a Mg test kit and it read like 1500ppm wich is on the high side. This makes me think that my hydrometer is reading low. However I was adding some MgOH every now and then without really knowing how much the tank needed. I did a really big water change last weekend with the redbug treatment and will be doing my second treatment tomorrow followed by another massive water chage. I'll retest the Mg leves and see wether the high Mg levels were from me adding the MgOH or from mixing the salt too strong. My gut is saying it's the hydrometer.

I accidentally looked at the past events and was so excited that barry from clams direct was going to speak this month...then I find out that it will be a water testing fourm. Throw some ideas out that you have for july speakers and we'll tell you what we most want to hear. I do appreciate all the work you do to help us get great guest speakers!

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that easily. They all have very busy schedules, receive TONS of e-mail, and not everyone replies in a timely manner (if at all).

Some of the speakers that I'm working on for the remainder of the year include;
Charles Delbeck
Eric Borneman (hands-on coral ID workshop)
Dr. Roy Caldwell
Sandy Shoup
Fernando Nostrapour
etc.

If anyone has a request toss it out there and I'll see what I can do. I lined up our June speaker, Dr. Frank Marini, after a member asked about him.

I know! I know! Thats why I said "I do appreciate all the work you do to help us get great guest speakers!" As I know what a pain in the butt it can be and I didn't want to come off sounding rude or bossy. I think that it would be cool to have a frag demo showing how to frag zenia, sps, lps, softies ect.
