2008 M.A.R.S. Frag Swap March 1st

Target is a good place to buy the cheap disposable kitchen food storage containers, should be less than $1 each, maybe as cheap as $0.50 each

Oh yeah, don't go too crazy on the containers. I find the small GLAD see-through containers with tight lids work remarkably well. What we are trying to avoid is a bunch of loose frags floating around in bags, leaking all over the place.

So:
Please be sure the frags are securely mounted (ideally encrusting already)
No ziplocks, plastic baggies, etc. We need them in labeled hard plastic containers with lids for easy transportation and to keep the water off the floor

Exciting stuff!

The SPS frags are fine if they are not encrusted or mounted as several people like to glue them directly to their reef.

I have a 120 to fill and hoping to score some great corals at this swap. I was considering bringing 3 frags for me, and 3 frags for my wife so she could also pick through the rounds. Would this be frowned upon or considered cheating the system? I don't want to ruffle any feathers.

If it is ok with everyone else, would she need her own membership?

Thanks.

Your membership covers your wife. You both need to pay the entrance/food fee and when your wife is picking you may not be in the picking area with her, that would be cause for frowning.

No frowning allowed. :D

Pete hit the nail on the head. If you bring your wife it is so that SHE can pick things SHE likes. If you are telling her what to go get or coaching from the sidelines, then it is an abuse of the system and would be better not done. The idea is to get spouses interested in sharing the hobby together. Just make sure she is picking for herself and not for you twice :) SEE YOU THERE!

If you can explain to your wife in advance what you like and she is willing to pick what YOU like and not the really COOL softies SHE likes, then I'd be amazed...

Sorry in advance if this comes off sexist, I say it tongue in cheek.

Pete, while there is nothing we can do to stop it THE POINT IS THAT SHE PICKS WHAT SHE LIKES!!! The rule is not set up so people can pick twice. If your wife likes WHATEVER she likes you should encourage her to pick that. If you are coaching her to pick for you, you are not really in the spirit of the swap but more in the spirit of self greed. The reason we allow people to bring their spouse is so their spouse can share in the hobby. For instance, if someone is to bring their wife/husband, and 6 basic frags between the 2 of them, then use that to take home 25-30 frags that their spouse could gaive a rats behind about, that is NOT COOL. Remember that some will bring 50 frgas and all of them nicer then what you bring and they will get half of what you get. If you abuse the rule, the spouse thing will be removed from future swaps and that really would be a shame. We are all friends and club members, doing the right thing is worth much more than getting twice the stuff at everyone else's loss. "To thine own self be true" At the BAR swap I was nervous to bring my wife. I brought 6 rares and 50 frags. She used her 3 rares and 25 frags on mostly mushrooms and zoo's. I felt much better as I saw the junk pour in from her. She loved her junk and I got plenty for myself with my picks.

It's good when the partner is happy :)

I know too many reefers that have to suffer the stress of unsupportive spouses :(

Cool. I'm really hoping this event helps get the wife excited about reefkeeping. I was thinking the same thing: if she picks out some frags that sound or look pretty to her and then gets excited about them growing out in the tank its a win/win. I don't care what she picks as long as she likes her choices. Thanks for the clarification.

My wife went to the dixon swap with me, and she picked out a few frags for "our" tank.

She now has a 12 gallon cube in our bedroom that she is setting up.
Sadley she won't be able to make this event because it is the same day as her baby shower.

That explains why you're such a turkey! It all makes sense...

I need a favor from one of you tech savvy folks.

I know there are many other online reef boards that some of ya'll frequent. I do not need to name it here out of respect for RC, but I really need to get our flyer out to as many people as possible. Would you be so kind as take the initiative and post that flyer link to all the other boards. No need to confirm, just go out and spread the good word to as many folks as you can!

We really want a great turn out here, so the gloves are off and we are on the offensive. You will see Paul in a fish suit on the corner of I/80 and Madison twirling a MARS sign here soon. So help me, help you. More people = more and better corals for all!

Here is the link again: (you can view the source for the HTML coding)
