200G too heavy for Laminate Wood Flooring?

Hi everyone,

I have an empty 200G Glass Tank that I'd like to put in my livingroom. However, I just finished installing Laminate Wood Flooring (locking system, not glue) and I was wondering if the weight would be too much for the wooden planks to withstand. The floor underneath is plywood, not concrete, and I have a 1/8-1/4" thick underlayment under the wood flooring as well.

The tank will only be holding approximately 100G of water, 100lbs+ of sand, and some driftwood so it wont be nearly as heavy as a typical 200G reef setup.

I'm sure someone on this forum has a large tank on a wood floor; any insight on this?

Thanks in advance,

Dave, the floor will almost certainly handle it from a compression perspective. Generally your first-order concern will be the structural load-bearing/spanning elements supporting the floor.

My 225 is on an engineered floor with no problems.

I had the same question when I installed my floor. I spoke to the manufacturer and was told that I should put the tank on a rug of some kind and it should be put perpendicular for the best results. I have put my forty parallel with the planks and have had no problem but I asked for the 200 which I had until a few days ago.

Good Luck

Great! THis is excellent news. My wife had me holding off on filling the tank until the new flooring was in, then we realized maybe it was too heavy... I'm very happy.

My father is a structural engineer, and he claims that the flooring is enough to support the weight based on how far the weight is spread and height of the water. I trust his opinion, but I just can't help but be nervous.

Laminate floors would be able to handle the weight and compression but you may also want to consider water damage. If too much water gets to it can be a pain to clean. I accidental tipped a bucket of saltwater onto my pergo floors and after a few days they started to warp then chip in a few places. I learned my lesson and I tiled the area under my tank.

If you are very careful you should be ok. Dont tell the wifey.
