200G up three sets of stairs?

Ok folks I need to be reassured!

The tank will be 40x40x30 and I have to bring it up to my condo which is on the 3rd floor...

Here's my uneducated/unexperienced plan:

- 4 guys
- 2 suction cups
- a dollie (2 wheeled L shape metal thingy)
- cardboard
- good ol' duct tape

Step 1
Cardboard the tank's corners and dollie's bed

Step 2
Mount the tank onto the dollie (on it's side so that it's 30 wide instead of 40) and strap it tight with duct tape

Step 2
Stick the 2 suction cups on the top end (right above the dollie's handles)

Step 3
Go up one step at a time with 2 guys on top each pulling on a suction cup and one of the dollie's arm and the other two would be pushing from underneath...

Yay or Nay?

I would say Yay.....you may want to do a test run by yourself with the dollie and see if there is anything that you may have over looked.......the only thing you forgot in your formula was pizza and beer :)

SBC

I would not use duct tape. the tank is so heavy if it gets rockin i bet it could break through the tape like butter......unluss you wrapped it like 50 million times....but thast a lot o tape:)

get some nylon ratcheting straps or something.

How dare you underestimate the power of duct tape !!!
...you're probably right though:(

Is your floor going to hold the weight when filled???

Yes I made sure with the contractor and his engineers since the tank is pretty much the main reason I wanted to buy a condo in the first place, just don't tell my girlfriend :D

You might consider a piano mover: they have padded boards, strapping web, and the like with which they stabilize large fragile weights. They move large tvs and other such objects. They could get it there.

That would help me sleep better at night for sure... any idea how much it would cost me?

Or you could rent an appliance mover for few hours. They have the strap already attached and some have rollers on the back, for going up steps. They rent for like $10/$15 a day. I've moved fridges up and down steps by myself with them.

Good luck!!!

trust me, I am a big fan of the duct tape - red/green

How wide are your steps. You might have a problem when you get to a corner. 2 of us carried a 225 up to a 2nd floor. The hardest part was turning the corners.

The steps are somewhere between 34-40 inches wide... I had measured them a while ago so I don't remember for sure but I know I was relieved... The flats between floors are pretty wide too... I will go measure everything tomorrow to be sure.

How heavy will my tank be anyway? Will it compare to an average refrigerator? If so I might be worying a bit too much for nothing...

Maybe I missed it, but is your tank glass or acrylic...??

Great an engineer! It's glass...

I used 1 other adult & 1 teenager & it almost pulled my fingers off moving a 200. 4 adults would be fine, maybe 1 more person if you can find him would be good for going around corners.

WAY MORE THAN A FRIDGE!

Call the company you ordered it from and ask them for the weight. My 225 weighed about 300lbs to 350 lbs. It all depends on the thickness of the glass. Also if you can take the stand up and get it ready for the tank first, so you can set the tank on the stand when you get it up stairs. Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s nice not to have to pick the tank more than 1 time.

My guess is its atleast 1/2 glass...So you will be in the range of 400lbs. The eaiest way to move it yourself would be to get a good strong handtruck. One of those appliance hand trucks with straps. You don't want to strap it down tight as this might break the glass. Just enough to hold it on there. Three people would probably be enough. One on each handle pulling it up, and one on the bottom giving it a little boost. A second person on the bottom isn't a bad idea "just in case". That way you also have 2 teams so you can alternate who is pulling on each flight.

Good luck!

thanks for the tips everyone, the move is in July so I still have a month or so to plan the whole thing... It will most likely be the dollie/handtruck plan OR piano movers if I can find a good price (fully insured)...

Be on the lookout for a 200G Cube thread soon ;)
