20Gal long setup pictures

and i am not putting the back ground up i am going to get a different type of algea that requires 12-16hrs of light so i wont need the light on at night time then

Its a good idea to put the fuge on a reverse light schedule but it really isn't necessary so don't worry about it too much.

thanks guys, i will put a block in eventually if i need to but for right now i want to get it setup. i have an awsome little wetdry after the refugium but my mom took my camera so i will post pictures tonight. :)

I believe it was nanotuners themselves that told me what junk they are..:p For the size look into something like the Tunze Doc nanoskimmer.

I believe the new skimmer Current is coming out with for their new Solana tank is supposed to be significantly better.

hey guys :) i just bought 5 seahores from my LFS because i was told they are perfect for cycling your tank. i hope its true because they cost a lot. pictures will be up soon of my wetdry

my goodness i hope you are not serious....that is the worst news i have heard today...why on earth would anyone tell you to cycle a tank with fish, let alone seahorses is beyond me...intensely cruel to animals doing that...

your tank should cycle fine with a piece of nice fresh grimy live rock...

your tank is looking good though...

personally i would have made the pump area larger and the sediment area smaller...(ie reverse the sizes you have currently...i have a 20 gallon display and i lose about 1/2 gallon a day of water...if you lose half a gallon your pump chamber will dry up..

I actually built a similar setup to yours and it's been cycling for the last 3 weeks....I cycled my stuff with a grocery bought cocktail shrimp...I would advise against putting anything alive in there while it's cycling.

Here's some pics of my setup....

Good looking frag tank mangus.

bottlecapp, I am going along with those other outraged posts... I hope you're joking.

Although, based on my experience, I could see Big Al's recommending something like that.

I would definately find a home for the seahorses in someone else's tank, they're very fragile animals and if you don't get them out soon they WILL not survive very long in a cycling tank... especially 5. Your lfs was lying big time. I do hope your only joking though...

It looks like you have a metal hose clamp attached to the return powerhead. You should get the metal one out asap and replace it with a plastic one (you can get them at lowes or hd).

Totally agree with everyone else on the seahorses find them a new home right away.

CPT.

hey sorry guys i have been trying to get back on to tell you i am kidding, yeh i got the medal clamp out like 2min after i took those pictures, the tank is going great still no live rock need more money :(

once my tank has finished cycling would you guys remove the bio balls or leave them? I must say evaporation is crazy its drops acouple inches a week, and thats awsome mangus7175 that we have such a similiar tank, my two cycling fish are a male and female balloon molly.

You're cycling your tank with live fish? I hope not.

I would remove the bioballs actually right now. I would use LR rubble instead. The bioballs will become a nitrate trap which will not be good for your tank. When you tank evaps use RO/DI water to top-off. I have to manually top-off my tanks every few days...it'll become a hassle so you might even think of getting an "automatic top-off (ATO)" system going.

Good Luck!

Nice looking start on your tank. I set up a 20 long a year ago. It's recovering from several months of negect at the moment, but here's some recent photos http://www.mosquitonet.com/~wanderer/tanks/tank.htm

I love the idea of blocking off part of the tank for refugium, wish I'd thought of that. I'm currently planing to set up a second 20 long as a sump/refugium. As you can see from the photos the tank is kind of it's own refugium at the moment with all the turf algae. But on the plus side, my phosphate and Nitrate stay undetectable.

Evaporation on these small tanks can be a killer, I have to add about a quart of RO/DI water a day to keep my salinity stable.

I've been running skimmerless for about 6 months since I removed the Prizm skimmer I started with. It was an old worn out one a friend loaned me, and just wasn't doing anything. Got a Tunze Nano Skimmer on order, will let you know what I think once it's been running a while.

Again, cool looking tank. Nice to see others using the 20 Long!

Phil

mangus7175,

Could you post a few more pics and details of the refugium side of your tank? I'm thinking of doing the same thing to a 50 (30x18x24) I have sitting around.

thanks,

-avp
