20Gal long setup pictures

i was thinking about that, if insert LR rubble in where the bio balls are should I keep them fully submerged or have water trickle over them? I will have some pictures up later tonight after work.

I have mine submerged since it would be a good place for copepods to develop which will in turn provide food for your future inhabitants.

hey guys, i did a water test today and my nitrates were 10ppm and my amonia was 1ppm. I figured as soon as I get some live rock friday and it cycles alittle more my nitrates will go down as long as the amonia. I am curious to if a dawrf lion fish would be okay in my 20gal for a little while. he measures about 1in.

if your tank is cycling, don't add fish it's that simple. While he might make it, he won't be happy. You got to be careful feeding him and reove anything he doesn't eat, otherwise it's just more food for the ammonia cycle.

Not to sound harsh (but it probably will) doesn't your profile list your occupation as a fish store employee? Are the guys at work not helping you with your tank?

o no they do help me, its just nice getting another opinion, and also whats the purpose of this website if you cant get re-enforcement on opinions and questions?

your tank should be cycling with rock...not sand....and especially not fish..with out live rock or actual live sand there is no benefical bacteria in your system to eat the ammonia and trates and trites..and the only reason your parametes are even some what stable is due to your water changes (if your doing any) whch you shouldnt until your tank has pretty much fully cycled...

waiting is pointless....even fully cured rock will have die off in transport and start a whole new mini cycle.....and if you have fresh rock then you will be waiting quite a while before you should even think about adding any fish...

wow that sounded incredible rude...i am sorry i was in way trying to be..

I'm a bit confused. If all you have in the tank so far is clean new sand, why do you have ANY Nitrates or Ammonia?! You need some source of nutrients to start cycling a tank. Some live rock curing, a cocktail shrimp, a pinch of fish food something...did I miss that somewhere? If not where are the nitrates and ammonia coming from? You didn't use tap water did you?

lets see, phil i do have two mollies in the tank, i took abounch of crap sand from the refug at work to help get started and used bio balls. The only question is why is my refug getting brown but not my main tank?

I saw at homedept the 20watt and 50watt halogen bulbs. Cand I use them for another light source?

Unfortunately halogen won't work.

I (and others) have looked into this.

Firstly, these lights don't produce close to the optimal wavelengths necessary for photosynthesis in coral system.

Secondly, they are very inefficient. Heat output from these lights is enormous and will only cause more problems for you.

It's a shame because they are cheap and readily available.

What will work from home depot are power compact (spiral bulbs). Though, the spectral ouput of these also varies, be sure to read up on them before purchasing.

thats sounds like a really good idea, thanks guys for the help. The tank is doing really well and I should be getting some LR tonight. We will see

Hey dose anyone know about a DIY compact light setup. I want to go to my local elctrical supply house and make my own Comact light or make my own t5 setups. What would guys do? I think i am going to setup four t5's and also run my 65wat 50/50 coral life compact.

You can fit all that above a 20? :D
I've used these Compact fluorescent kits before and really like them. Quality reflectors are very important. One of their 2x55W kits would light your tank up very nicely.

if you're planning on T5 I would stick with it. They offer various bulb configurations that should meet all your needs. I would suggest having your actinic and daylight to be on separate switches to control your sunrise and sunset settings.

Check out this site, it might offer some ideas.

If you are planning on a DIY setup I would suggest a retrofit kit. This will allow you to setup your reflector, ballast and, bulb choices to be more versatile.

Currently I only use retrofit setups on my two tanks (currently running three).

T5's on my 10G
PC's on my 20G
and Viper 150W MH on my 20L

Have you used those kits before? I've got a 55 I want to upgrade the lighting on and need to know how wide their reflectors are so I can figure out how many will fit above a 13" wide tank. Also, are the reflectors decent shaped or just a C channel?
Thanks.
