I wanted to setup a sump just for a new and powerful skimmer,could I just have one half with the skimmer and the other the return area?

sure, thats fine. thats what alot of poeple do. they also add the heater, BSB (deep sand bed) or liverock with others theyre planted or macro for filter. or just all in one if its big enough for all. REEF-ON!!!

Just get some sheets of aryclic or glass and divide off the tank and put a bubble trap in if the skimmer is putting out micro-bubbles. Are you going to be running a fuge?

Thanks guys! I won't be running a fuge as I have a HOB fuge that I'm pretty happy with,May consider it.
