I've been lurking on here for some time now, but I never shared my build! I am currently awaiting the build of my 200 Gallon Display from concept aquariums in Calgary, AB Canada. I currently have a temporary display borrowed from my FOWLR tank running to get the system up and running. So I will go back and document the build up until the current setup!

My goals are for simplicity and ease of maintenance! I can't stand lugging around buckets of water and starting syphons. So this water change system will be the best option for me.

So, here are some details! I look forward to any and all constructove criticism.

Tanks:

Temporary Display - 79"X18"X16" - 99 Gallon
"Patiently waiting to be built" Display -84"X24"X24" - 210 Gallon
Water change/Settling/Skimmer sump - 50"X24"X12" - 62 Gallon
Return/LR sump - 48"X20"x20" - 75 Gallon
Frag Tank - 50"X15"X9" - 30 Gallon
Duplex Fuge/DSB tank - 48"X12"X18" - 45 Gallon

Equipment List:

Skimmer - SWC Xtreme 250 S2 (soon to upgrade to a RO Regal 300INT)
Heater - 1 X JBJ True Temp 800W Titanium heater & Controller
Media Reactors - 2 X Vertex U1.5 media reactors (not installed - waiting on new display)
Flow - 2 X Jebao RW20 wavemakers (not installed - waiting on new display)
Flow - 2 X Jebao WP40 wavemakers
Return Pump - Waveline DC10000
Frag/Fuge feed pump - Waveline DC10000
Manifold Feed Pump - Danner Mag12
ATO - Tunze Osmolator

Lighting - Current setup - Current USA 12X 39W T5 fixture
Frag lighting - Hamilton 2 X 250W 20K radiums - 4 x 54w T5's

When the new display is here, I am going to build a custom floating canopy utilizing the 12 bulb Current USA fixture innards. It will have 3 X 250W 14K Phoenix MH bulbs and 12 39W T5 bulbs retrofitted into the canopy. I also just ordered a 72" Reefbrite LED suppliment to add.

Water Change Setup

5 Stage BRS RO/DI unit
2 X 44 Gallon Brutes
Mag24 Pump
150W Jager heater
Koralia 4 powerhead

System Design:

The system changed ever so slightly with the addition of a seperate feed pump for the manifold located in the skimmer/settling/water change sump.

Water change system:

The pipe goes all the way upstairs, into the main sump for water changes, and to the ATO:

Left is saltwater back to tank, right goes down to ATO container

Lots of flow from the Mag24

Temporary 99 Gallon tank in location

The plumbing goes through the kitchen wall into 2 closets in the connecting room. Right closet houses 2 sumps: Top sump will be the skimmer/water change/settling tank. Then into the mechanical filtration and live rock sump in the bottom. Water goes from here back to the display via one DC10000, and to the Fuge/Frag tanks via another DC10000.

Hole in the wall behind the bottom sump. This houses power from a dedicated circuit, feed from water change in basement (replaced the hose valve in pic), drain line to drain in basement, and of course a 4" air intake for the closet vent. There will be an inline fan that will take moist air and vent it outside.

Now, Onto the Plumbing!

Now the left closet, housing the frag tank and fuge

Cleaned up the wiring in the main sump area with some conduit

(and before anyone asks...Yes... the tuck tape was a drilling mistake!!!)

Frag tank lighting somewhat done (still have to add the 4 X 54W retro kits)

Older pic, but one of the only full closet shots

10 Gallon ATO container located behind the lower sump on right side. The open space in front is where my calcium reactor and CO2 tank will go.

So now comes the rockwork. I wanted to start fresh. No more pests! If there are going to be pests... I want it to be my fault. No hitchhikers! So I decided to to the Bleach bath and Acid Dip method to clean all the old rock I had collected over the past couple years.

Bleach Bath

Acid Bath... WOW!

All layed out to dry

I pulled the tarp out into the sun whenever it was out to help dry it faster. I took it slow, and sun dried it for two full weeks after this process. I have to say... that it worked amazing!

Final scape in the tank - remember that this will be in a much bigger tank soon, so there will be a lot more space in the new tank around the rocks.

Wow.That is a super nice setup. How about an estimate of the time to do all the plumbing, etc? I am thinking of a larger project myself, but I'm not sure I have that much dedication or time. Will keep watching this thread for updates.

Well at this point im probably in to it for 3 weekends of plumbing. Not that bad if you have the right equipment. The best purchase I ever made was a pipe cutter. Saved me tons of time and effort. It was only $25. Ive been doing this for a long time and have plumbed many tanks, so im a little speedier than a newer person at plumbing.

The worst is that I never bought all the right pieces and quantities, so I would always have to go back and forth to the store lol.

The big thing for me, is the money. Im probably $1000 in plumbing alone when you add it all up. Im not a rich man, so this was a little tough to get used to lol.

Starting to get some color. Diatoms etc. Waiting for the hair algae phaze.

Then I changed my bulbs to the following combo:

Front
KZ Superblue
WP Reef Wave
WP Sunwave
WP Coral Wave
WP Super Blue Wave
KZ New Gen
Back

Pretty happy with this combo, but hard to tell until there is coral in there.

Sump closet shot:

The settling tank is really doing its job! A lot of the detritus is settling in the bottom of the first sump. So I just stir it up, and drain it for the water change. Gets rid of a lot of it.

After doing water tests and everything looking good as far as water quality is concerned, I added the first corals and an RBTA:

Fast forward to now, everything is looking amazing. I have absolutely zero algae thanks to Vinegar dosing. I am currently at 40mL/day. I am also still doing 40 gallon water changes about every 10 days.

RBTA

Palys, Monti and frogspawn

More Palys, Birds of Paradise frag
