With your background you have any thoughts on what is going on in Japan?
I do and have 30 years experience in nuclear fission. But I am sitting in NJ, not Japan. I have a good idea of what they are fighting and frankly I am not alarmed by what has transpired rather I feel more for the people of Japan who were literally washed away with their homes. Has anyone seen the guy washed 9 miles out to sea on his roof top?
I explained to a friend of mine just today that you need to be careful when the media sensationalizes the "explosions" happening to the reactor buildings. It may shock people to learn that these reactors are designed with "blowout panels" specifically designed to do exactly what these have done. These are hydrogen explosions and again I am here in NJ but I would find it hard to believe with my experience that any of these have even slightly damaged the primary containment vessels. But I can't say. The release of radioactive material is unfortunately not good but expected and probably necessary to relieve the pressure and keep the core cool. But the problem is really the fact that the news media now has thousands of experts on nuclear. Even the weather man now has a degree in nuclear engineering.
Keep in mind that there are some very real differences between these reactors and Chernobyl. Chernobyl had no containment building to speak of. And one safety feature that did in fact work was once the quake started, the control rods immediately returned to a safe position stopping the chain reaction. We should all be thankful for that.
The biggest problem I see is we need to stop listening to the likes of George Stephanopoulos and the sensationalized news media who know as much about nuclear and this accident as I know about open heart surgery (you don't want me operating on you).
This will get resolved and we will move forward. My heart and concern is with the perhaps hundreds of thousands of people that really couldn't give a crap about the power plant killing them, given their situation they perhaps already wish they were dead. Let's worry about them.
Oh yeah here is an irony for you. All of these nuclear power plants were scheduled to be shut down for good over the next year. In fact unit 4 was already shut down. How's that for bad timing.
