215g Caribbean Inspired Reef

at dawn (NPS gorgos are eating their baby brine breakfast. PS gorgos don't have the polyps out yet)

Thanks Paul. I've been doing the reef thing for over a decade now and I've never enjoyed my tanks quite as much as now.

Here's a few more close ups:
This is my favorite pair of jawfish. They are always getting along (some of the others tend to squabble) and even share the same hole for the most part. She looks pretty round here. Maybe we'll have eggs again soon

An NPS gorg. My best guess is Golden Sea Spray

One of the new Swiftias adjusted to the brighter light by turning bright orange as far as the polyps go

The other one kept the burgundy polyps on orange stalks

Have I said how much I enjoy this tank - awesome update & just love the Yellowhead Jawfish (have some of mine now, but they do squabble a little)

here's a (totally unCaribbean lol) video or the Mandarins doing their evening dance (nothing spectacular happens so if you see the first minute of it you've pretty much seen it all. lol . I have no idea how to cut it short)

Karin glad you didn't cut video short I enjoyed the whole thing very much. Thanks for sharing you have a sweet set up.

Everything is going great!
Taking the pellets off-line has really been the best decision I've made.

I've started dosing iron to boost the macro algae.

All 6 jawfish are still going strong. They still lay eggs and mouthbrood but I haven't been able to collect the fry.
Sorry if I missed it, and I know its been awhile, but why was taking the pellets off line the best decision you made for this tank? Was it more for the feeding of your NPS corals or something else?

Yes correct. The dosing several times a day resulted in a permanent bacteria bloom in the display tank. I couldn't see my stuff and all of the corals did poorly.
They certainly couldn't use the bacteria for food and I was just wasting money feeding bacteria instead of corals.
Everything is much happier now without pellets

Just read the whole thread. I love what you have done with this tank. I can't wait to see some staghorn's in there.

I vote for a group of royal gramma's. As long as you add them all at the same time you will not have any problems. I have kept groups or pairs of them in most of my tanks and they always form a harem with the largest turning into the dominant male. I've done a bit of diving down around cuba and one of the coolest sights is a group of 30-40 royal gramma's all hanging around an overhang, so colorful.

Another grouping that I keep and would look nice in your tank are Cherub Angels.

Hi. Sorry it's been a long time. Yes I did buy the jawfish as pairs.

I am now thinking about a little group of chalk bass.

Here's what it looks like today. Unfortunately I had a bout of hydroids really do a number on some of the gorgonians. I also had some kind of disease spread from a rescue (wish I hadn't taken that one in!) blasto to most of my other LPS.

So here we go:

bad pics of my flower anemones:

One of my Swiftias got killed by the hyrdoids but the other one is doing great! LOVING the frozen cyclopeeze. YOu can see a tiny searod basket star folded up around one of its branches

a christmas tree worm with a masked goby beside it (really enjoy the little swarm of tiny gobies!)
1123_4.jpg

This yellow finger is just so full of polyps and really active at feeding times. I like this one a lot
1123_5.jpg

just some Caribbean zoas
1123_6.jpg

some kind of really dense macro. I call it red cabbage because it forms such a tight little red ball
1123_7.jpg

golden seaspray -another one that got hit hard by the hydroids but doing much better now
1123_8.jpg

My scallop. I've had this one for a long time and it seems to be doing really well

I like it when stuff does well. It seems the worst is over now. I got a nitrate reactor and it's sort of a double egdes sword. The gorgonians are doing better and I have to worry less about cyano/hair algae. But the ricordeas are missing the extra nitrates it seems.

I'll clean the glass and take another shot and post it bigger, Dave. :)

I got some new additions! I had a thorny oyster before but sold it when my 125g burst so I am happy to get another one :)

And I got a little group of basslets but only 2 out of the 4 survived shipping :(
those two are adorable though and really enjoy each other's company. I wish I could add more but the rule is:
chalk basslets do better in groups but all have to be introduced at the same time.

And a lovely little saddles blenny (reminds me of a tiny hawkfish the way he looks around and hops):

I took a better picture of the lovely red flower anemone!

I am almost tempted to buy another but the place I bought this from was so unprofessional. :(
