It is not your exposure time, it is your white balance. Read your manual and learn how to set a custom white balance. When you know how, set the wb to your sand. On my Rebel XT, I just take a pic of the sand, and then set my wb to that pic.
There is also the depth of field issue, that is controlled by your apature setting. The this is what causes the object to be sharp and everything behind it to be blurry.
Shutter speed will be an issue if you are trying to photograph fish that swim fast (as most do). The faster the shutter speed, the easier it is to stop fast moving objects. You may have to change your ISO a bit to allow more light, but you can play with it. When I forst got my Canon, I went to an AMA Superbike race and shot from the infield. Well I had my shutter speed at about 1/2000 of a second, and it looked like the bikes were standing still. the bikes were doing about 160, and the spokes were all in focus like they were no moving.
Remember, it is digital, so take a million pics and play with the settings until you can get it the way you want it.
And oh my God, I would love to see that avatar gone also. lol

Especially since in some cases the best camera in the house still uses FILM.
Fugly doesn't even begin to descripe that Avatar's visual impact.

One of Scott's customers is a pro photographer, maybe he could be coaxed in taking some photos for people.
I am also friends with a fire fighter that just happens to be married to a manager at a local camera store. I might be able to get Bob and/or Kristas to come to a meeting and (learn) us how to use our cameras better. Both (in) and out of the tank.

Scott, I'd love to have them show us what to do. I have a $1K + camera that I take disposable looking photos with most of the time 
Outdoors it's great and takes awesome shots but the tank is a whole nother ball game.
I know white balance plays a huge part, i've had Pro's adjust my camera and take a few shots and its like night and day but I don't remember what they did (might have had a few J&C's in me at the time)
I messed with the balance the other day but couldn't get it right.
I think this would be a great time, even if we all simply met down at Scotts with the person on a Saturday for an hour or 2?
I'm down with something like that if Scott can set it up!

this thread needs some update!
For all those that are interested in the bulkheads with the ball in them, I bought mine from www.customaquatic.com They have both the 1" and the 1.5". They are only $5 or $6 each from them. They can be gotten in white and black and the 1" are also available in blue and beige. They are listed under plumbing fittings/tank jets.
