Can you say Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus?

You are going to need SCUBA STEVE!

Absolutely Amazing

I am now holding my breath until I see more pics.

Hey bios,

Slowly, slowly... I signed the paperwork to have services disconnected on Monday this week (gas & electricity). At this stage the demolition and site clean-up will occur this side of Christmas. In mid Jan, the 60kL (15.8k gal) rain-water tank will go under ground. From there we can start in ernest.

I have also put down a ~50% deposit on Skimmer, Calcium reactor, Kalk stirrer and media reactor. My Reef Creations is building it all for me.

Skimmer will be a beast! 24" diameter by 60" tall reaction chamber, needlewheel skimmer. In truth I was originally intending a Volcano skimmer, but that did not work out. I will post some pictures as soon as MRC send them through. I believe they are drafting the design at the moment.

rocknreef - I may just need to get some SCUBA gear (been meaning to anyway); I've gotta warn you, it will be a long breath-hold. If I can put my first coral in around the end of September 09, I will be happy.

PaulieWalnuts, there is an equipment list on page 3 (maybe 4??).

Great update Diablo.

Not to bash MRC, but aren't there any local acrylic fabricators in AUS? Seems like shipping across the globe would be a bit $$$

Wow this is going to be awesome!!! Took me a while to find this one :)

I love your outdoor areas and living room... it should be cool to see that tank from outside through the glass doors.

Thanks ReefEnabler!

Chrisrush... good question about the local fabrication.
Unfortunately there is insufficient market scale to support full-time acrylic fabricators who specialize in fabrication for aquaria. We do have plastic engineering and sign writing businesses who have CNC, but when aquarium equipment fabricators did pop-up in the Australian market, they were fairly back-yard in nature; good designs but not necesarily perfect execution. Given the cost of raw materials on a skimmer this size, several boxes had to be ticked:

  • Must have worked with commercial scale equipment
Must have access to large diameter cell-cast tube
    Must use CNC in fabrication
Must have good air injection / skimmer experience
Unfortunately, I just couldn't find that locally. At any rate, any cell-cast tube used in a local fabrication would likely be sourced from the US anyway.

Where possible, other stuff for the house will be locally sourced. Below is a picture of the dining table we have purchased for the new house. Brought it from an artisan show-room in the Hunter Valley (wine region outside Sydney). All Australian hardwood; suspended slab design.

WOW, looks like an amazing house and tank!

I think I need to switch Telecom companies to yours! The scarey thing is they could be the same ... it's a small world out there!

I am looking for a skimmer like that... (maybe not 24"D, but larger and taller than most companies seem to offer). It never occured to me to talk with MRC because all they advertise is beckett based skimmers and no needle wheels. I'm very interested to see what they make for you considering they don't generally do needle wheel based skimmers.

What pump will this skimmer use? What feed rate do you think the skimmer will need?

September..?????I don't know if I 'm going to be able to wait until this date lol:D

How much surface your house will make?

Thanks Robb. I love timber furniture. I do a bit of furniture making myself... but this dining table was too beautiful to pass up. The figuring and the red tones are gorgeous.

SaraB... its not who you work for, but who you marry thats important! I get paid about a 500 Gallon salary. The fact that my wife is an ER doctor and extremely sympathetic to the cause gets me up above 2000 Gal :D

Untamed, I thought so too about MRC and skimmers, but apparently they exhibitted needlewheels at MACNA this year:

Not sure on the pump. I think it will be a 220V Reeflow of some kind. Will find out shortly.

As for flow, I am working off as much science and as little heresay as possible. Minimum of 0.75x system volume per hour = 3000GPH. 2 minute dwell time in skimmer requires a reaction chamber volume of 3000GPH * 2 mins / 60 mins per hour = 100 Gal.

Bios, the house (without pool or garage) is ~250m2. The tank is about 8m2

Got it! I think I need to find me a new hubby ... :eek2:

Makes sense Diablo. I'll make you a deal, you pay for my flight to AUS and I'll personally bring the skimmer/reactors to your new house. :)

I agree with the marriage statement. My wife is also in the medical field and will be supporting my upgrade soon enough.

I like your approach, where did you get this information?

Look at that... I'm liking that one on the left.

That is good skimmer theory. I've heard 1.5x system volume per hour (but I suppose .75x might be good as minimum). 2 minute dwell time also sounds right to me.

Jonathan, I am actually a fan of your big square skimmer. I love the fact that it is so unfashionable and ugly, but such a good performer! It's really well designed!

It's interesting that air stone technology seems to have developed quite significantly since the introduction of downdrafts, beckerts and needlewheels in the 90's. If we were all to get over our high tech gagetry obsesions, we might just find that counter-current airstone skimmers powered by an appropriately powered air pump are the best performers of all.

RE: information source for skimmer dimensioning: The information comes from Escobal's book "Aquatic Systems Engineering" which draws on knowledge and experience from chemical and process engineering. A good online summary of Escobal's skimmer information is available here

Great work if you can get it :D

I don't take any credit on the "design"...It's a little Escobal, HTK, and Snailman. :D

Honestly, I would like two of them.

Indeed, I'm also a big fan of the "all go no show" idea for things like this.
