2300G Cylinder - Preview

It is entirely possible that the material is different, country-to-country, brand-to-brand, of course. What I tested was what was available at the time here in a major home improvement/hardware store. No doubt the composition changes, but from what I have seen, I just wouldn't want the potential risk, especially when there are much better materials available.

I know people just don't like it when I throw out negative comments, but again, so many people think it's OK to use whatever material they can readily get their hands on. I can't tell you how many aquarium keepers have told me playground sand is perfectly fine for aquarium use, I give my arguments against, and they still use it, only to have a complete system meltdown a few months later. Sure, there are many factors, but again, why use a sub-par material to save a few bucks? Really? We are discussing life-support here.

So given the choice of the following materials, which would you say would be the best for use in a reef tank?

1. egg crate

2. perforated schedule 80 PVC

3. Perforated cast acrylic

I think eggcrate is styrene wherever you go. I suspect it has something to do with rigidity, injectability/mouldability, price etc. Styrene is nasty stuff, so it's totally feasible there's a noticeable biological interaction

Hello Jonathan,

I never have used the two other materials except PVC but full plates (for other usage in the tank). What I like is the solid structure, the possibility to stick together, easily for fixing something to it and the "openess" for water flow; with perforated schedule 80 PVC this is only partially achivable.
Allmost all coral farmers in Europe use it as well

Nope, but it's easy to infer that with sub-optimal husbandry, there could be some detrimental affects even in dilution. DOn't want to derail this thread though, just a point I was making to Diablo. :)

House is almost finished inside and I have another 2.5 weeks off work. Next job is to build the formwork and pour the concrete sides of the sump, refugium and crypt-tank. Aiming for water in the tank ~16/1.

Given that its 15 months since the tank started, here is a retrospective of every aquarium related shot I have taken over the time.

Nice update and retrospective.

Forgive me if this was asked before, but are you concerned about the inner form on the stand giving way or was concrete poured inside that core as well?

Hey Rob, the stand was designed by structural engineers. It is an 8 inch suspended slab design. It does not rely on the inner form work being there at all. The strength of the concrete and steel is sufficient.

Nice retrospective. Did you get nostalgic posting it?

I think impatience is the dominant emotion. Given the building contract specified a mid April end date (which we were never going to hit due to bank/finance issues) and we have had subsequent target dates of July, September and Christmas, I am itching to get in. At least I can now get started on the aquarium!

very nice great job.
what a sweet setup. keep us posted with new pics.

Thanks!
