2300G Cylinder - Preview

i'm glad to hear that you'll be able to start working on the aquarium. so far everything is top notch. have you decided on a livestock list? sorry if that has been asked before.
don't forget to update us on the progress of the house also :)

I would be going nuts by now, not being able to work on that massive tank. Well at least we will have something to look forward to this coming year.

I think impatience is the dominant emotion. Given the building contract specified a mid April end date (which we were never going to hit due to bank/finance issues) and we have had subsequent target dates of July, September and Christmas, I am itching to get in. At least I can now get started on the aquarium!

Mm, I know how you feel. We broke ground on our house 2 years 4 months ago. I finally filled my tank with salt water last weekend.

i've been following this build for over a year.. its truly incredible and inspiring for so many reefers.

As much as I love your tank I can't get over how awesome your home is. Great design and I especially love the tile and wood features.

Can't wait to see this tank up!!

Thanks for sharing all those pictures

This tank is amazing. Do you have plane for the lights ?

salali, my plan is to use 6 x 1000W metal halides for the main tank for as few hours a day as possible (maybe 5 hours), plus supplemental fluoro, mainly to balance the color and provide lighting outside the MH period. I am using BLV (Ushio) 14KKs.

This is what the MH plan looks like in Sketchup:

I have 10 power outlets on the ceiling, connected back to a switchbox. Each is switched via a Solid State Relay, which in turn is controlled via a home made micro-controller. 6 are for the main MH, 2 are for supplementary fluoro, and 2 are for wall fans to help regulate temperature and minimise the amount of time the (3 ton) chiller has to be on for.

Just today I built the first MH lighting frame. I am yet to receive the 4mm toughened glass that will go between the reflector and the frame:

crazy setup
amazing work wow !!!
its gonna be one of the more amazing tanks there is .

I hope so dragonfish_!, but it is entirely possible to have a big, well equipt tank that looks poor. I hope my aquascaping and tank management skills are up to the task!

Thanks ashish. I am fortunate to have been able to incorporate an aquarium like this as the centerpiece of a house build from day 1. It gives a lot of flexibility that is not otherwise possible. I still have a long way to go to match the tanks of my inspiration.

Thanks D5HP. Its certainly not a flashy mansion... no marble or walnut or columns or french-style iron work anywhere, [OK.. I'll concede that the Italian mosaics are a little over the top] the but the thrill for me is that the whole layout is very deliberate, designed specifically to match how we live our lives. I'll post some updated photos shortly.

Damien, thanks! I appreciate the offer. Maybe during the live rock phase?

I took the plastic film off the aquarium for the first time yesterday. In general, it looks pretty good. Its still quite grotty (I will clean it tomorrow). There are a couple of scuffs that I will need to buff out, and there are a couple of places where the optics are not perfect (to be expected in a formed cylinder), but I am pretty happy with the result.

View through the aquarium showing holes for plumbing. 3 of the bulkheads are for 2" plumbing and are almost 4" in total diameter... they look tiny in the photo:

Also have completed the concrete screed for the service tanks in the external room. I purchased a PVC welder yesterday. Should have the tank-linings completed early next week.

And for those who are equally interested in the house. Apologies for the exterior lighting... directly overhead. A lot of glare.

This is probably the first time I've posted this view with the painting mostly competed:

The front door was originally the same material as the internal doors (Tasmanian oak veneer, which is very light in color). Next to the deep honey colored cladding, it looked a little naff. The clear solution was to paint it fire engine red!

The driveway was poured on 23rd December. Merry Christmas!

Full frontal showing the nose of my 200SX... not sure what they were marketed in North America as? Silvia or 200SX. At any rate, I can say goodbye to a Lotus Evora... it was the aquarium OR the car... I chose the aquarium.

Not much change here, but I do love the "bush poles".

Next 3 shots are of the Pantry... this is one of my favorite rooms in the house. The idea and the execution have come together perfectly:

The idea of designing the whole house around the aquarium is excellent! Just curious, did you ever consider Sola-tubes or a skylight over the tank as part of the design?

thanks for sharing the pics of your house, very nice detail. it looks like you are getting close to being able to move in? did you build the reflectors for your 1000W Halides?
