24 gallon Aquapod (lots of pics)

Thanks for the compliments...
I have the nanocustoms IAC chiller... but I have not gotten around to installing it yet. I may take a stab at it next weekend.

I really like the progression of your tank. I personally like the LPS you picked out. Im alittle bias when it comes to chalice and blastos-those pieces will fill in very nicely over the future. You also have a beautiful flower anemone. Over all, you have made me truely think about adding a nano to my collection. Kudos.

Thanks for all the compliments.... here are a few updated pics.
I made a new addition this week, a big fat red Trachyphyllia from sharkys. I traded away the green brain I had for a year... I was just looking for a splash of red to spice things up a bit.
I've thinned out the zoa garden a bit and now have about half the morphs I did six months ago. There area few reasons behind the thin out. Some I just traded away, but a couple morphs just got choked out by more aggressive ones.
Most things have been fragged at some time recently. I have a little ric factory going on in the lower right corner of the pod along with some zoa frags. The kenya tree is still po'ed from it's latest frag/move. I've managed to keep the xenia contained to one isolated rock in the center and removed it from the main rockwork. ....gsp has kind of escaped however and is currently attempting to choke out some of the green purple eaters I added as some of the first coral in the tank.

For comparison... this is what the reef looked like about a year and a half ago (it started as a custom 15 gallon):

Some acan lords I nursed back from next to nothing:

This was a freebie from sharkys reef.... it's starting to show some really neat colors:

A couple more enchinos.... the pic really does not do the lower one justice... it is really super bright pink.

The clown has finally decided to host with something that does not seem to mind her.
Here she is feeding the new brain:

How's the indigo dottyback doing?

Thanks... the indigo is an fantastic fish, it's doing quite well and shows zero aggression (but is a pod hunter). Always on display as well... not shy at all. It's actaully in the fts if you know where to look, a few inches above the red favia along the right side.

Excellent tank! I always feel like gorgonians really add to the "natural" look of the tank and that halimeda algae looks really good. Have you been feeding the gorgonians anything? I might have to give some a shot.

lots of good info on pods here. I used to be a big tank guy but now with my moving situation I am looking into a 24 gallon pod. I am just as excited in setting a pod up as I was about the125gallon. And the tanks, lights, and equipment are so much cheaper!!!! My 125 was WAY to expensive!!!!

Hello fellow hobbyists-

I havent been on RC that long but in the hobby a number of years. I found this thread in a search. I am thinking of getting rid of my 75g tank and downsizing to an aquapod 24 with the 150w HQI. You all have done some amazing things with these tanks. I see that there has been some problems with the Aquapods - particularly shipping, but they do look nice and price of the whole 150w HQI setup is about the cost of what one might spend on just the lighting itself for a smaller tank. It seems to be a good bang for the buck. Any thoughts / advice?

Thanks for al the props:

GoodBorg3... current has nice lighting. But if you really want to do it up they have a 250w version of the sunpod out that would be great over a drilled and sumped 33gal cube.

Forgot to mention this addition. It came from sharky's a couple months ago...
I know they (the stars) do not have a good track record, but I figured our system is established enough to give one a shot.

Very active, very intersting addition to the reef.

Also.. I've removed most ofthe zoas, or tried to and added more LPS.

These sun coral (from sharky's as well) cluster in yellow, black and orange take up most of where the zoa garden was.

great tank. love the suns. how did you get them to mix like that..pretty kool looking, any pic of them opened?

Posting primarily to keep track of this great thread!!
General question...if you get the AP 24 without a visible crack, what are the chances you have to worry about an invisible leak?
Are these tanks really that prone to problems?
Ordered and received a 24 from Drs. F&S about two weeks ago, but haven't opened it yet. Was planning on letting it sit til the kids open it for Christmas, but now I'm thinking I better open it and fill it with water just to make sure.
Any advice is appreciated.
Icenine2005, are you just really unlucky, or do these tanks have that many problems???

I think I just had a bad string of luck in addtion to being one of the early users of the tank. There were bound to be problems with a new product release....
The 'pod is creeping up on a year old now and I've not seen any leaks.
I see lots of 'pods getting set up without problem.

I'll snap a pic of the sun coral all open, it's pretty cool when all three colors are out at once.

slam308, I would defintely open it now. I ordered my Aquapod from the same company and have had no problems! Dr. F & S have great customer service. I read up on them prior to ordering the Aquapod. I knew about them as I have ordered alot of my livestock from them. But, what made me ver confident with them and the Aquapod is their positive reviews here on RC about there no hassle return policy with the Aquapods if there is a problem.

Glad the situation isn't as bad as I first thought!!
Nubiant,
I already wrote to the F&S thread. I wasn't sure if they would honor a guarantee if we'd let the box sit for two weeks. They said no problem.
I can't wait to check things out tomorrow.
Unfortunately, we can only water test it for 3 days and then we have to hide it so they don't find it.
At least it's not as big a problem as I originally thought.

This is a fantastic tank with an awesome array of colors but still looks very natural. That flower anemone is one-of-a-kind. How are your gorgonians doing, do you feed them regularly, thanks for any info.

Great thread!! I'm planning (hoping) to get a 24 gal aquapod for or just after christmas. I am wondering about the heat problem. I will be setting it up in a basement that is unheated, but remains at around 60-65 degrees. I'll be putting in a heater to keep the tank warm during the night cycle. But I'm hoping to avoid a chiller. I'm wondering if the lower room temp might keep the tank from overheating with the stock equipment in it.

I'll be doing upgrade to the tank in the future. But I'm hopeing to run it for 3-6 months before doing much in the way of upgrades.
