24 gallon Aquapod (lots of pics)

icenine2005 the tank looks awesome. you said you are doing large scale water changes, how large? I am curious because My tank is cycled and ready for stocking, I would be happy if looked half as healthy as your tank....

BEAUTIFUL 24 GALLON!!!

...I leave the fish gasping at the bottom of the tank... just about anyway.
I've been changing out 12 gallons a week (well, 7 to 10 days give or take) which is most of the water in the display.
I've got the procedure down to science so the whole thing is over in about 20 minutes, siphon out and siphon back in.

Things obviously get po'd being out of water, but the whole tank usally looks like nothing happened half an hour after re-filling.
I usually go in with a turkey baster and flush out detritus from the knooks and crannies of the rockwork before I siphon out. When doing that, I'm also getting things to retract or close up prior to taking water out

I use chem pure... but nothing else. I split a bag open and use about 1/3 of one in the back (in another filter sock of course).

Hello Ice9,

Thank you for putting together a nice Thread.

I have an AP24 that has been up and running for about 6 wks now. (24lbs LR, a tiny TR "Nemo" for my sun, a misidentified by the LFS Goby[They called it a Fushi Goby, but I can't find it online or in any books], 2 mx turbo snails, 2 margarita snails, 1 Trochus snail, 2 Nassarius snails, 4 dwarf red leg hc, 4 dwf zebra hc, & 1 emerald crab) 1 hitchhiker boulder coral that is pencil eraser sized, and a snail broke the 2 small hitchhiker yellow jeweled finger corals I was unable to find them after either to replace somewhere. :mad2: :(
I am new to SW but have sound husbandry skills from FW.

I have been reading up on many mods, and I was hoping you could help me with a couple of questions...(I am totally new to the world of Forums, so if I do something wrong let me know)

Could you post a pic of the finished "surface skimmer" action, I am confused about all the mods that say add a cassette piece, etc. to block the top grate (seems to me that the water will flow over the entire width of the falsewall if I do this) (do you still use the sponge?)

I have one sponge in and currently the ceramic and bio balls, but those are coming out.

I have 2 SilenX 8dba fans in the hood, though I am not sure I should have gone with the 8dba, not much air movement, will have to wait for summer to see if I need more.

I have the stock pump in still, because the MJ1200 I ordered doesn't swap out as I thought it would, Seems to me that the bulkhead is too high in the AP24, I guess I will need to pipe it with elbows like the stock set-up, (unless anyone can provide a better answer)

I want more flow! I like your set up, and I am thinking about a similar set up. Ultimately I want wave action (in the future perhaps) I was thinking about trying to shoehorn a SCWD in there and cut a 2nd bulkhead, and have wave action, but hte SCWD is kinda big, and I don't think I could fit it all inside.

Do you have any expierence with modding a tank with fish in it already? I know some plastics can let off some nasty chemicals when cut or heated (via drill friction) perhaps I am out luck?

Ok I have a dozen other questions but I think I have gone on too long as is.

Thanks for any help you can offer, especially for clearing up this cassette mod for me, and your taller wall.

Here is a pic of our Goby, I hope

Thanks NEK!

First off... you won't need a "cassette mod" for the aquapod. The intake grates are at the top of the wall on this thank unlike the jbj where they are well below the water line. ...so the surface skimming is already there for us. With the overflow and the hydor I'm running I've never had any problem with gunk collecting on the water's surface.
I'll see if I can snap a pic or find one somone else has up that look like mine.

I ditched the sponges and the bio-media the tank came with from the get go. It's not that I don't think bio-media is ok in a nano, it is imo. The bag of bio-whatever and those ball however will be a pain to take out of the tank and clean off from time to time, so I didn't want to mess with them.
I do have a wad of bio-bale that I used in the tank this reef was transfered from. ...it's easy to yank out and just swish around in the removed water I've got on hand when I've done a change.
I know people keep the sponges, or at least part of them, but I've never felt the need for them in out reef.

As for the fans... they can't be worse than the stock single fan I have here. ;)
I do need to switch it out and just add the second. Maybe I'll get around to it in the next few weeks.

Hmmm... I'm not sure what you mean about the MJ not fitting, though it's not the model I have. I have two 900's and they were plug and play. I used the stock tube to connect to the pump and all.

More flow is a must in these tanks imo. ...drilling that false wall with the tank stocked would present all sorts of problems I would think. ..but it can be done really quickly, you could bucket everything while you drilled and remove most of all of the water and had something to collect the plastic shavings that will be produced ( or I might think you'll be picking them out of your display for some time to come..lol). ...you could always hang something over the flase wall rather than drilling... and even that is only if you really can't stand the thought of just having another pump out in the open of the display area.

Good luck!

Nice tank icenine!!! And all this with the stock lighting???

Any plans for a lighting upgrade in the future?

Amazing! I love the new changes that you've made. A clam and sponges!! As always, you continue to blaze new trails and give me food for thought for my own aquapod. You're tank is truly an inspiration.

Softies like these are nice for beginners in that they are easy to care for... but they can also crowd a nano tank rather quickly. When the day comes to set up the "big" system, I'm sure I'll want to add these corals again, but I'm going to keep them out of the nano plans.
I couldn't agree more about the leathers. I have 4 in my tank now but it's hard to part with them. I guess it's time to start a bigger tank and move them :)

Keep up the great work and thanks for continuing to share your insights with the rest of us.

Honestly... in a year plus established reef like yours, I bet you can take care of a sponge.

The clam was a baby sitting job.... the guy wanted me to pick it up and then decided he did not want it. ....so, months now in my tank and seems to do just fine.
I'm starting to question the conventional wisdom regarding clams and light.
Starting to... not suggesting others do... but I am starting to. This clam is growing and looking just fine.

Leathers...meh, they are perhaps too easy for most nano tanks.
They do well, then cause you problems a year or more down the road.

I have a male flasher wrasse that is in the tank atm... temp addition while someone else gets a tank ready. Nemo beat the crap out of him the first day... but she and everyone else seems to be OK with him right now.

I'll try to snap a pic.. he's a stunner. I'm tempted to get one myself if the reef seems to deal with the bio-load.

Im curious on the CF lighting, do you know what max wattage these can take, and I was reading somewhere that someone put in 2 40w inplace of the 2 32w lights, which Im unsure about considering that the space in there now would not allow the length of a 17" long light since the 32w are only 12.5" long, if any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated

I made that mod to my aquapod. The ballasts are rated up to 40watts but you have to move them to accomodate the longer bulbs. You'll have to take the reflector off and drill new holes to move the ballasts closer to the edge of the hood. Not hard to do and you can increase your lighting by 25%.

It's an easy mod but taking the hood apart is a pain. The other thing to consider is that icenine has been able to do amazing things with stock lighting. Sometimes, if it ain't broke you don't have to fix it.

Top down shot of some LPS... the pic STILL does not make that pink chalice look as good as it does in real life.
