24 gallon Aquapod (lots of pics)

So.... after some troubleshooting, it's the pumps contrubuting a signfigant amount of heat. I replaced the stock pumps which as it turns out were throwing upwards of 25w each, with 2 maxijet 900s at 8.5w each. ...that makes a big difference, drops the wattage by 33 and the temp by 5 degrees. So... ditch the stock pump in your aquapod, they are crapola. That stock pump is supposed to be rated at 290gph... but who knows how accurate that is. I'm probably not much further off using the 230gph maxi jets. It feels about the same anyway. I'll still likely add the nanocustoms IAC chiller later since it will fit, but with temps down and around 81 to 82 it's less urgent.

You might want to ditch your one fan and add two high efficiency
fans first off. This is the best mod I have done yet. I cannot believe the cheap equipment on this rather high priced POD. I will have to go back and look to see the model number for the fans. I do know they were about $9 ea. I cannot even hear them run, even at full throttle, twice the amount of air movement.

Hey there ice, I'm waiting on a 24g aquapod and really like some of the things you've done. Just have a couple quick questions.

I assume yours came with the hydor? Never seem them in action, do they work as advertised? What do you think of your locline setup now that you've been looking at it for a couple weeks - too bulky or is it worth it for the flow?

What are your plans for a skimmer? After hearing about your heat problems, I've started counting watts also. I'm going to go with the 2 maxi-jet 900s like you did, but the aqua-c skimmer I like has a 20W maxi-jet 1200. I'm going to have an open top (150W viper if it ever shows up) so I'm not sure what affect that will have on heat since the ballast is remote, but I won't have a good place for fans or chillers like you do in your hood. Just wondering if your heat problem have been with or without a skimmer.

Thanks.

The hydor did not come with the 'pod.... but it's only 10 bucks from F&S. It works as advertised, I'm sure I'll have to clean it out from time to time, but I've very happy with the effect.
If you are going open top you should not have the heat issues I am seeing for the most part. So the additional maxi jet even at the higher wattage of the 1200 should not be a big deal (I think)
You really have more options for a chiller without the top as well... take a look at some of the smaller titans for instance.
....as for what I will do for a skimmer? That's gonna be a project. I'm thinking to fab something out of acrylic in a design based off of the cpr line. Without the top there are lots of options, but since I am married to the hood I'm going to have to get creative.

...and I thought about replacing the fan... but I kinda like the idea if the iac chiller from nanocustoms. Maybe its power tool syndrome? Why use a screwdriver when a power drill will work?
lol
I know it would be cheaper to just add another fan but from those I've talked to who have already installed the iac, there is not much more to it than installing another fan.... just making a few cuts into the splash guard.
...and since replacing the pumps temps are under control imo, so I can think it through a little more before I take the plunge on that.

The transfer is going to be soon, more pics to come when I get things in.

I thought I'd join in the discussion since I just recieved an AquaPod 24g with PC lights from F & S. Fortunately, I was aware of the shipping problems so I wasn't crushed when I opened the box and the tank was cracked top to bottom. I'm willing to wait until I get one that's in tact. Hopefully, my high patience level will pay off as a reefer!

Icenine: I was planning on doing the hydor mod, but I'm a little worried about the hydor Splashing water up to the light's splashgaurd. I also don't want the water level to be so low that it is below the trim. Have you found this to be a problem at all?

Icenine: What are you doing with your rear compartments? Rubble? Chaeto?

And to everyone who's gotten a cracked tank: I thought it was wierd that F & S is sending out a return shipping label so they can get a busted tank back. Are they doing that for everyone?

natureboy, yes, they are all sending out a return ship label. The cover on my Pod is very close to the water level, I'm not sure if you can aviod the splash on the light guard but it only takes a wipe or 2. Are you planning on using any type of skimming? I'm fed up with the Fission and I have friends out here who had used it and saw it work well for about 2 months before it showed signs of defects, what are you planning on using for skimming?

Yes, I sent the cracked and leaking tanks back. It does seem like a lot of shipping expense for them.... but on the other hand they probably want to make sure people are not taking advantage of them and getting free tanks just by saying one was busted.

There will be some splash on the guard but it is pretty minimal like smy said. I just wipe it off every couple of days.

Whats will be in the back chambers? Two maxi jet 900 pumps, 50w visitherm heater, Chemi-pure carbon and some bio-bale. That's it.
I've done the "mini fuge" thing in my 15 gallon set up and it is just not worth it in the long run.

Hope your next one arrives intact!

Thanks for your replies!

I don't plan on getting a protein skimmer. The nano-skimmers seem to be more trouble than they are worth. I think skimmers are popular on nano tanks for two reasons: 1) people with large tanks have them, so the nano-folks don't want to be left out and 2) people have the idea that more technology is always better. This isn't to say that skimmers aren't good for a nano, it's just they aren't as necessary as on a large tank. On a nano, it's easy and cheap to change a higher percentage of the water, and that's what I plan on doing.

As far as the Hydor, I wasn't clear in my last post. I'm not worried about splashing. The hydor makes a bulge in the surface of the water and I'm worried it might come in full contact with the splash guard, which would be noticable while gazing absent-mindedly into your tank. Thoughts?

The hydor makes some nice surface aggitation in general... I rather like the effect. If you are using a MH it will give you nice glitter lines, but in a PC set up because the light is so diffuse surface aggitation is not that noticable. You will see it with the moonlights... but that is when I like the effect most.

This is a great thread, I have learned so much about these pods. I thought the Aquapod looked better than the JBJ, but now I don't know. Have there been as much problems with them cracking as the Aquas? If you all had it to do again, which would you buy? Is the equipment included with the pods better in one over another?

thanks!

....I'm moving forward with the tank, and after a few weeks it looks like this one is OK.

There are few differences between the jbj and current tanks really. It just comes down to what tweaks a reefer likes better.
For me the feature on the 'pod that puts it in front of a NC is the lighting on the PC versions. Seperate bulbs and controls for actinics and daylight allows you to do a dusk to dawn effect.

Thanks for the compliments!
(there are more pics to come, really)

GOOD IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!! :D Just kidding..haha

Glad things are looking better this time ;)

(there are more pics to come, really) Good to hear !!!

I've finally transferred both my year old 15 gallon reef and five month old 2.5 gallon pico into the 'pod and even added a few new items.

Here are some details of what our reef is like now:

Sand bed:
There is about 20 lbs of sand here. I'm of the "thin sand bed" school when it comes to nano reefs, nothing more than an inch.

Live rock:
The rock from the 15 went in here as well as the pico rock. I added another pound or two so now there is maybe 25 lbs all together.

Rear Chambers:
Two maxi jet 900 pumps, 50w visitherm heater, Chemi-pure carbon and some bio-bale. That's it.

I'm going to continue my practice of large scale weekly water changes in this tank. 50% each week maybe more.
I'm running the tank at 81 degrees.

Aquascape:
Since most of the zoas had been moved from the 15 gallon to the pico they were kinda consolidated onto a few rocks. I broke out the superglue and managed to create a little (well, kinda big actually) zoa garden section to left in this display. I think its a kinda neat effect and should get more impressive as things grow out a little more. There is some macro growing in various spots of this section that I know I'll constantly be trimming back. I've also planted the toadstool in the middle of this garden. The anemones are here as well, both the carpets and the flower anemone. Other than that I pretty much moved the 'scape from the 15 in as is. Only a few things got shifted around slightly.
The rock work is for the most part half an inch off the back wall. One of the loc line outlets is pointed back there to help keep it flushed. In addition to that part of my maintenance routine is to flush out the rock work a bit with a turkey baster when I do a water change.

Ya know, here we got a bigger tank and still don't have room for much more. (that's what I get for combining two tanks into one)

3 Nerti Snails
2 stometella snails
1 Huge zebra turbo snail
1 Yet to be identified snail (maybe a variedly of Naussurious)
1 hitchhiker xanthid type crab that's given me no reason to try and remove it yet.
1 light blue feather duster tube worm
A bunch of bristle worms (I never seen them munch on a live coral, so they get to stay)
A couple of peanut worms
half a dozen spaghetti worms
More little feather dusters than I care to try and count
Misc sponges and tunicates (a couple that are getting kinda big)
Other little things that I've yet to identify. Even after a year something new seems to pop out every week
1 gazillion pods (that would be just an approximate number, however dwindling by the minute since the new fish have been added)

What's gone:
One of the mistakes I made with the 15 gallon was not allowing room for things to really grow out. One mushroom polyp became three quickly, GSP really does grow as fast as people say it does... etc. So some things got culled back a bit. I also had too many leathers in the tank and have removed the finger leather and devils hand. ( I still have the toadstool, green sinulara and kenya tree )
The yellow clown goby is not moving into the 'pod. It's chronic perching on my candy cane was causing those corals to bleach out. In general it's a pretty boring fish anyway.
During the transfer I accidentally crushed the anemone crab. Ouch. I got a deal on a trio of "regular" porcelain crabs to replace him.

What's new:
One of the incentives for the upgrade was new fish. I know the pygmy angels have a spotty rep for picking on coral, but lets see if I can keep him fat and happy enough to leave the zoas alone. So far so good. It was really a toss up between the pyg and a six line wrasse. ...the pyg seemed just a little more unique. I've been eyeing midas blennys for a while... very interesting fish. I don't foresee adding any more fish to the mix at this point since the blenny will get considerably larger.
Both new additions were eating (and pooping) like champs from day one.
I added a new gorg, the first I added back in November is doing well enough that I decided to give another variety a go. This variety is muricea elongata.
If anything else goes in it will likely be some sort of acan lords or other very colorful LPS. Having said that my zoanthoid addiction will likely cause me to try and jam a few more morphs in the garden. ... you can really pack those suckers in together. Regardless, I'm going to be very selective about any future additions.

Feeding:
I use a pretty wide variety of food. Chopped up Krill, silversides, scallops and chunks of life line frozen or formula one frozen. Marine one flake, and algae flake get added once in a while as well. The pyg will take flake out of my hand which makes it easy to get some plant matter into it's diet (actually I can hand feed all these fish). I am using a little of the Julian Sprung "sea veggies" green sea weed as well. I also will put a drop or two of dt's Reef diet oyster eggs or phyto/plankton mix in once a week ( I switched to this from cyclopseese) for the filter feeders and coral. This gets done the day before the water change. I feed the fish three or four times a week and the anemones twice a week (I do NOT feed them every day, and in general I think feeding fish several times a day much less daily is severe overkill). I mix up what I feed, trying not to feed the same thing twice in a row. I'll spot feed most of the LPS every other week or two.

I gotta say, I'm really happy with this set up. ...I think it looks really nice for a "box" set up with not much to it. As much as people diss this style of tank it has a lot of potential without having to do much to it. The next project down the road will be to design a protein skimmer that will fit in the rear chambers. Till I figure that out I'll just keep up with large scale weekly water changes.
OK... now just grow. ...here we go into year two.

Here are some pics, everything is still kinda PO'd because of the move. I had been torturing them with the transfer.

I have to figure out how to get a good top down shot, it's an awsome view of the tank.

Here are some lame attempts at top down on the zoa garden:

WOW !!! It looks really Beautiful ! I love how you placed everything. Looks like you got some great pics. :D I am so glad that you finally was able to get it going. You really have a very nice selection in there.

I also like the Rock Anemone:)

Congrats on the great work!
