240+g tank project

Nice tank but I have 1 question. Why are you going with 1" on the OM 4 Way on a tank that big?IMO it is hard to beat the OM 4 Way using 1 1/2" .It is your tank and you can do with it as you wish.I was just wondering.I really like the external overflow and the polished edges.

I'm using two 1" returns on my current closed loop and it works just fine. The good thing about acrylic is I can change it pretty easy if I need to.
Thanks for the advice though.

Nice tank. Especially like the overflow. Wonder if feeding the CL through the overflow would end up being a problem.

Well the 120 tear down went even smoother than I had hoped. No casualties and I only broke a couple small pieces of the millepora. If I would have attempted this a couple of months from now there is no way I could have got the mille out in one piece. I should have the plumbing done by weeks end and then I'll be ready for stocking. Here are some pics.

The holding tank is tied into my system, so the water chemistry is exactly the same.

I used 1 3/4"X 7 1/4" lvl's as my joist, and Advantech high performance sub-floor for my floor.

Here is the tank set in place. I'm mixing 50g of water at a time and adding it to my sump, then I'm pumping 50g to the new tank. This may seem like a slow process, but I thought it would be better for my system to introduce this much new water a little at a time. The final 75g or so of water will come from my holding tank that my corals are in.

You can see part of my fish room behind the tank.

Here are the 2" stand pipes made of black pvc, compliments of Geo.

I'll post more pics as soon as I get the plumbing finished.

Looking real nice Chris. I can't wait to see it in person. Is there a specific reason as to why you have the overflow off the side instead of the back relative to the front view?

It just makes it easier since all of my other drains enter the sump on that side. It also looks less cluttered from the fish room side.

had to look twice to see the tank in that one pic. it's so clean and clear. Knowing you, it will stay that way even when it's fully stocked.
looking good! any more pics?

Thanks guys, I'll post some more picks tomorrow. The tank is stocked now and everything is running good. I do have a micro bubble issue from my sump. I didn't realize how much water that Sequence Hammerhead pump really pushes. Holly cow, my sump is now a class five rapid.

I'm finding that out too, but I LOVE the flow the Hammerhead has. :D

OK Chris, you've had a little while. Either update us or I'll be forced to come over and see it in person. (Which I plan to do eventually.) :D

Can't wait to see more...

very nice. can't wait to see more pics. What is the third bulkhead in your overflow, with the screen, for??

LOL bassman, you beat me to it, I was wondering the same thing...

that it is ...a closed loop in the overflow.
saw it with my own two eyes. the pics don't do the tank justice!!

I took some pictures last night, but I just need to post them. My idea of having the closed loop intake in the overflow isn't going to work out because there is too many bubbles getting sucked into the pump. I'm going to put the closed loop intake in the tank side and make the 3rd drain in the overflow a feed for the skimmer. I've tried to tame the bubbles in the sump, but it looks like I'm going to have to build a new sump with multiple baffles to slow the bubbles down. ;)

The other project planned is to build an aluminum light rack that will slid back into the fish room for easy cleaning and maintenance. It will be similar to the wood light rack that I have now, but since the new one will be twice as big, I thought aluminum would keep the weight down.

I'll try to keep this thread updated as I make progress on the tank.

Looking great.

I just found this thread, or I would have warned you about the CL in the overflow. It might be possible to get one to work, but they really should draw water directly from the tank.

I have a sequence 5200 on my return and did not built my baffles correctly in my sump. Make them F A R apart. I think mine are like 2" and I still get bubbles getting sucked under. Fortunately, they do not make it back to the tank, but the baffles are not really operating correctly.

Go with at least 4" to be safe. Mine are the full width of my sump which is 17" wide.
