I have the sump dialed back some due to the gurgling noises. My sump level goes up and down as I get a surge of water. I gotta figure out how to fix that.

One possibility to control varying heights in the sump might be to do a high window in a baffle, similar to the low window you put in the baffle after the refugium section. But if you're not using an internal skimmer, does it really matter much that the water height in the sump varies?

My only concern was for my switches and ato. However I dialed back the return and have stopped that flush I'm getting down the durso.

Sump looks great. What thickness of acrylic did you use? I am looking to do something similar and worry about flexing. I assume you used silicone to secure them on the glass.

I did use silicone to attach it to the glass. I used acrylic glue to build the sock holder. The thickness is 3/8. It flexed just a little when one chamber was almost full before spilling over into the next chamber. It's pretty strong and would recommend for baffles. If your building a acrylic sump I would use a little thinker but for glass tank for a sump, this worked perfect.

Looking more closely at your sump design I think the problem is that you have the darker baffle taller than the sock baffle. The reservoir where the water first enters the sump should have the highest baffle of all in your sump. That is what evens out the flow to the rest of the sump so that levels won't keep changing and you wouldn't have to dial back your Durso.

Another thought for sump design is that by having your refugium go all the way front to back you cannot slow down the flow through the refugium enough for it to perform optimally. Better to have a main flow through on one side, perhaps 1/3 the width, and the fuge taking up the other 2/3s. One for next time, perhaps.

Dave I think you bring up some good points here. I thought the first area where the socks are was taller than the baffles from what I can tell from the pictures. I would have put the fuge on the right side withe the return in the middle so the keep flow at a minimum. Do you have any example pics of what you are suggesting so that we could reference?

Nope, no pics to hand. Also, the trouble with taking the refugium right out of the flow as you suggest results in a lot of junk accumulating at the bottom of the fuge in my experience. You definitely want to keep some flow through the refugium, but not nearly as high as your main flow through. A parallel raceway as I suggested accomplishes this.

Picture if you will a sump with the first section where the water returns from the tank through filter socks then over the highest baffle. Then the next section would be divided into two parts lengthways, one with maybe some media reactors in it (the raceway with the most flow) and the second with the refugium. The last section, divided by the lowest baffle, would have the return pumps to the tank.

It's just a suggestion, not the be-all and end-all. Some people break the refugium out into a separate tank. Some prefer an external skimmer and/or external media reactors. There are so many ways to set up a sump and people settle with what they are most comfortable with.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this to me as I get it now. I like that the middle section is divided into to separate chambers lengthways so as to create the raceway and fuge. I would assume the baffles on the raceway side go under the first baffle then through the second while the fuge has an under over standard setup. Could you create a spill way from the fuge wall into the raceway camber if in the event the water level gets dangerously too highness the fuge to maybe help with balancing the water levels in the cambers during a power outage or some other shut down?

You're awfully hard on my brain cell for this hour of the morning. Your sump should be sized to receive and hold ALL the water that drains into it during a power or other type of failure. This may well mean the refugium portion is flooded, depending on how much room you have under the tank (if that's where your sump is).

Here's another alternative you might want to consider, which would be to have a valved drain into the refugium before the bulk of the water gets directed to the filter socks (depending on which way the drain pipes from the tank are coming). Some people think this enriches their refugium more. It really depends on how much detritus your display tank drains off and how much you like to clean your refugium.

I almost went with a refugium in a second tank but couldn't figure out a way to make it work with the space I have. I really like that idea. My first build I didn't do enough research and built the refugium baffle at water level so my water ended up skimming over it. Least I built this baffle with openings just above the sandbed. Thanks to all the micro bubbles I can see the flow in the refugium. It has a nice counter clockwise flow going on. Thank you all for the suggestions and feedback.

Hey Mark, Sorry I missed your question. I ordered my rock and sand from reefrock. Both are "dead". I did not cook it before placing it in the tank.

I have placed 3 shrimp in a net to start the cycle. I did this Thanksgiving night. I have check my Ammonia for the last 3 days.

12-1-13
Ammonia .25ppm

12-2-13
Ammonia .25ppm

12-3-13
Ammonia its a heavier .25ppm


While I wait for the cycle to take off ill work on finishing the stand.
