Ok guys another quick update so i went to creation reef and aqautics here in woodstock ga. They have a state of the art Water testing system. It cost $5 just to get your water tested through it. Its computerized and examines everything!!!! I mean everything!!!! I got my top off water tested and my tank water tested. My top off water salinity was at 1.022 tank water 1.023. I informed them of my fish happy tank so quick this time. Anfd first of all let me admit on my old 180 that was mostly taken care of by a good friend of the family. I paid for tank the equipment and everything but he told me what to purchase and what to do. I ahve taken some of his tricks he learned me with that tank and my others and yea i have done it my own way. The reason I ignore advice and move my own way is because I have had success that way. I havent had a fish loss in years no joke. Also about my DIY rock some of my pieces arent porous becuase i made them that way. most of my porous pieces ended up breakign so tehy were smaller than what i wanted so the bigger pieces I made them non porus and they stuck together alot better i didnt add salt when i made those bigger pieces. Like i said im not hear for controversy. Im not here to argue. i keep saying all i want is piece then 30 minutes later i check my pc and see yet another rude or obviously sarcastic remark. Its ok cuz like i said i will not worry about that nor respond to it. So with that i say this thanks guys for all the help so let me say im not asking for help anymore!!!!!! Ideas yes I would love those give me opinions if i like it ill use it sorta like when brandon said take the sokc out bye bye sock on my way for sponges soon. I wont respond to anyones rude comments any longer and i really mean it this time. I said some nasty things in my last few threads and were closed for them that was my mistake and if anyone was offended sorry but i wont be doing that anymore. I am moving on with my tank and if you wanna follow by all means do so. I want people to see you can move quicker with your tank not hurt your fish and keep great water quality. If you wanna see that and and see it can happen then continuen to read this thread and you will see magic. I really have to get ready to add more light I have my halides coming here on thursday im buying fiji live rock from my LFS everytime i get a chance now my goal is to have about 300 lbs of live rock. I want a tank full of softies love the look and cant wait to see my finish product. Thanks everyone for their post im on page 4 on day 3 thats great =) Ill have pics in the morning of the tank i am due for a water change ill do one before so you guys can see it running clear before the change during me changing it and after the change =)

:blown:

Frankly, I am tired of seeing your posts of 500 sentences with no paragraph breaks. I am no longer going to read them and I'm sure MANY other people on here who would otherwise help you aren't going to read 'em either.

While this may be an informal place, please try to use some semblance of grammar.

Same here, but...

Here's the issue I take. It's not that someone new might stumble onto this thread and think Man, these people are mean, I'm scared to post a question...no, it's far worse than that. I'm more concerned that someone new to the hobby will stumble onto this thread and thing Man, that seems so much easier than the other advice I've got, I'm going to do it that way.

Very much agreed as that is always my fear on forums. There are other ways to do things than the way I do them, but I like to teach people what has been proven to work. I am just tired of trying to convince Deric. There are just far too many inconsistencies in his timeline and posts. There are far too many times he ignores good advice, and uses "trust me" as his reasoning for ignoring it. I, like you and many others here, volunteer our time to help others, and it is frustrating to deal with someone that does not care. I have been doing this a long time, and I still take advice, and learn more every day. Arrogance is not something that is a good trait to have in this hobby, and this is the reason I am biting my tongue.

I was the one that pointed out the leak, and was ignored. This was not even a piece of advice... it was a critical flaw that, if not addressed, could have ended very badly, and with the way it was "fixed" likely still will. I hope that I am wrong.

People do things in a way that works for them. I think he must have some experience since his profile states that he's been doing this for 3 years now or 5 ??. I think we should forget about the past and move foward with the thread and hope he is succesful.

Derric, I hope that you can take advice when you ask for it. There are many helpful people on this site but I think they too are staying away because of your replys. I know for sure you have lost a couple helpful people from posting on your thread.

Good luck with your build

yeah, because apparently his wallet isn't hurting..........yet.

which is ironic, since his original build, the plywood tank, he insisted he did not have a bucket full of money to put into this hobby, and was why he refused to get a glass tank, and why he insisted on doing things diy, but then i see things like adult size naso tangs and such in his 1 month old tank.

I test my water daily with hydrometer and test strips. Im always at 1.023 Here are pics to prove it. I only top off once a week and i do weekly water changes. It takes about 3 days to evaporate when i use the sock. But sponges It evaporates alot faster

Glad to hear it. I would suggest you calibrate that hydrometer against one at a LFS or someone in your local club. Mine is .003 low, and every one I have ever seen has been off by some degree or another.

If you are topping off with salt, you will run into a problem eventually. Keep an eye on that salinity and when it reaches 1.025 you need to switch to fresh water top off.

When people talk about filter socks they are talking about something like this. I'm not sure what "sponges" you are using or how you are using them such that they absorb your water, but I would love to see a picture or a link. I would personally never use a sponge filter in my reef tank, but you have shown that you will do whatever you want.

I am still going to try to help and encourage this build, although I am growing more and more suspicious that Dericc is a very clever troll who has managed to string us along for 3 threads and many many pages. Good luck and happy reefing.

You said it better then what I did. I just got the opinion that the last thread was closed by a first time post addressing the argueing.

No, the last thread was closed because it had dissolved into a bickering and insult throwing contest :).

Lets try to keep this on topic from now on before this turns into another thread from the Lounge.

Derric , waiting to check out the updated pics

Hey i also have to top off with saltwater not due to evaporation but cause i skim wet. Maybe he skims wet? that would explain the salt top off.

I was asking for the test sample from that fancy, $5 computerized test. If you could post that, awesome. Didn't they give you a printout?

Make sure to add that salt to the sump so it mixes a little before it hits the Display. If you pour it right into the display it may touch the fish before it dissolves and burn their flesh.

Yea I will give you guys an update once i get home i have it in my office

As I said before guys thanks for all the comments I wont respond to anymore rude negative comments. I will address my leak I had though. When i setup my tank i spilled water when i was filling it up thats why i thought it was just from that and not a leak not becasue i thought i knew more than anyone. But I will be home shortly I will take my hydrometer pics and take more pics of fish and the tank as i make my water change =)

Btw i have no clue what trolling is =)

AHA!

I said you were a troll, not that you were trolling. A troll is a thing, a person. Trolling is an action. If you really didn't know what I meant you would have said "I have no clue what a troll is." But you associated the thing with the action, leading me to believe you know exactly what you are and what you are doing.

BUT

I will say that your threads are the best thing on here, and I eagerly await your updates :) So troll away (or quite possibly you really are this reckless and oblivious... regardless), I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

I agree with phenom5, when I had started this hobby, I was under the impression, from reading and such, that I had to wait a month or more for my tank to cycle. But my LFS said you should be ok after a week. Well guess what I lost quite a few fish my first 2 months. I had issues with nirate due to fish dieing and I couldn't find them(alot of live rock), it was bad. Me being new and having no idea, and I wasn't even aware of these forums back then. My morale and ego took a pretty big hit, because I had no idea what I was doing wrong. So yea I know deric is an expert and knows how to handle these situations, but someone new doesn't and the stuff he says is not the proper way to go about things. Somethings can be overdone but never underdone (not even sure if that is a real word). Cutting corners when it comes to the acutal tank itself is a bad idea. This hobby isn't expensive, not for what most people want to do. But it can get expensive with mistakes.

I don't know about them being the "best thing on here" rather far from it, but entertaining none the less.

here are some pics before the water change. If anyone thinks anything is cloudy it really isnt it is super clear i have some algae on my back wall i liek the look of it AND TODAY WAS MY FIRST SIGHTING OF PURPLE ON MY DIY ROCK!!!!!

LOL i thought it was a nice time to simulate a power outage =) Oh and BTW yes thats a empty bottle of purple up in the sump I have kept it up against my acylic I really dont want that to come lose I have made DIY sumps before but none of them had to deal with this much flow nor volume so i ust wanted to be extra sure. You guys can laught at me bout it but its ok it works great the sheets are super secure. I wanted glass sheets but they were kinda pricey =(
