Can this thread end please?

Sweat sock filter? Really? The OP is either completely ridiculous or a teenager. No adult would be this oblivious and ignorant in the face of knowledge.

I suggest using the ignore feature if you don't like this thread.

Deric, can I get some of your tank water sent to me? I have a new reef tank that I am setting up and I want to be able to cycle it in 3 days, then I'm going to add 5 tangs to it the next day. I heard your tank water can do this for me.

This thread is actually entertaining, guys. It's like watching a smoldering vocano waiting for it to erupt :). I, for one, don't want it ended or closed.

I do have a suggestion for all well-meaning posters, though. Derrick thinks he knows exactly what he is doing, better than anyone here, and maybe he is right. So, just stop giving him advice. Less angst that way. Just watch the drama unfold, let him use this thread as his blog, and occasionally remind other newbies that this is NOT the way it is done.

Let the drama unfold, sit back, and wait for the catastrophe that is sure to happen, happen! At least IMHO!!! :D

C'mon guys , if this keeps up the thread will be closed and we won't be able to lead him in the right direction. I know this thread appears to look like one from the lounge but Derric is serioius here, so lets give him a little respect so that he keeps posting.

Just woke up Tank is looking really good everything is sprouted out. Just fed my tangs they love sea weed on a strip Im heading back to my LFS today to check my water levels again i rasied salinty to 1.025 last night Im looking to see how that goes =)

So I guess that's a no to the tank water question?

I apologize Deric. I have to admit your attitude is much better in this thread than previous threads and I'll back it down. I do have one serious question though and I in no way mean this to be rude or to put you down. Just a couple of posts ago you said, "I wouldn't recommend this to anyone". So my question is why did you do it that way? If you don't recommend it and it's not the way that 99.9% of people in the hobby agree it should be done, why not just be patient and wait a few weeks for the tank to cycle properly? It's obviously to late to change anything now, I'm just curious as to what the motivation was to doing it the way you did?

Those of you that are continually insulting deric because he may/may not be taking your advice are just as immature as you are claiming him to be. Live and let live. If he has his heart set on doing something, you can offer your advice all you want but in the end he is going to make the decisions and you guys can't seem to accept that for some reason. No need to get all giddy like a high school aged girl over something that doesn't affect you in the slightest, so kindly, grow up :)

That said, I would like to offer some bits of advice for your build:
- Stop topping off with saltwater, you need to get a refractometer, raise(or lower) your salinity to 1.025-.026 and top off with fresh ro/di water daily and not weekly
- Slow waaaaaaaaaaay down on livestock additions and if you haven't been already, start a QT tank. I would hate to see you lose all of those amazing fish because you bring something in with ich.

Good luck with everything and don't let the haters get you down.

Well I have done it becuase I have done it beofre in the past and it has worked for me. That old vid with the fish in the 55 yea it was bad to have that many tangs but excluding the purple tang they had tons of space to swim all were happy and I kept them for over a year none died all were very healthy. I dont like when people say something cant be done and the fish wont be happy when thats not always true. I have learned since ive been in this hobby there is no one way to do anythign. Everything you want to do in this hobby can be done millions of different ways. thats why i do it buddy. I mean look some people on here say a blue jaw trigger isnt reef safe, You have seen my pics you see my coral he doesnt eat them they are reef safe. A sweat sock filter pad wont work. hmmmmm tank is clear water levels are good and then some say 20 gallon sump wont work I have showed pics of a simulated outage and everyone can see where it stopped it made it.
But to be honest I just enjoy the hobby and like doing things that others may not do and be seuccesful. Trust me I love my LFS But im not their weekly and monthly to just donate them my money =) I wouldnt do this stuff if I didnt know it work work. =)

Thanks buddy and im in the process of starting a 29 Gallon QT Tank really soon. Im taking everyones advise and slowing down on Livestock. Im worried now about getting really good fiji live rock. I dont understand why topping off with salt is a problem not trying to be rude but I have done it and my levels stayed good but for good measures I will start topping off with fresh for now on. And BTW thanks for everything you said it really means alot. I came on this site to find friends who love the hobby just like or even mroe than me and i swear i walked into a slugfest. I just feel that if someone was doing something and i thought it was worng i would give my opion if he didnt take it I would be like cool its his tank his money his livestock. I would never get mad some of these guys insult the hell out of me and its so frustrating I have said over 50 times in this thread I dont want problems Im not giving in to negative post but it just continues =( its ok though as long as the tank keeps going strong and the fish are looking good that calms all my stress =)

Good luck with everything and don't let the haters get you down.

Good advice. Even though your methods of husbandry may be working out for you, you take a chance every time you add stuff to your tank. Some stores or etailers may not have as good of luck, and you may be unknowingly transporting some disease to your tank. A QT tank would be great in that you could watch said fish in order to ascertain as to whether this fish should be added to your healthy collection in your main tank. Marine ick on tangs may not even be visible at the store but within a few hours of transport to home it can be seen.

Yea im going to petco for the 1$ per gallon sale and getting me a nice 29 maybe even a 40 gallon QT Tank If its emoty and just using live rock do you think i should do any water changes?????

I dont understand why topping off with salt is a problem not trying to be rude but I have done it and my levels stayed good but for good measures I will start topping off with fresh for now on.

When your tank evaporates it is just evaporating freshwater as the salt will stay behind. By topping off with more saltwater you are gradually increasing your salinity level over time. Topping off with fresh water is simply replacing exactly what evaporates, which will keep your salinity where it needs to be.
