250DE Metal Halide Survey

I just unpacked my new lights and was going to use the 10k coralife for awhile because I am still suffering from sticker shock on the Aqualight Pro 250's I just bought, but one of the 10K bulbs is totally off axis an an obviously a reject that got through.
I was going to wait to get new bulbs, but it looks like I need to get some now.

I was looking at the Ushio 14K 250w DE MH
or the Hamilton 14k 250w DE MH

I have already had the 14k Pheonix and were too blue for me, I prefer the crisp white, with just a hint of blue.

Which have you used of the two, or another lower K value that will be white and NOT yellow.

The Ushio 14K doesn't seem to have any blue in it at all. Just pure white. The Hamilton 14K will give you blue, but it's such a poor quality bulb that I'd rather you avoid it altogether.

The Giesemann 14.5K will give you a tiny hint of blue, but it's expensive. Well worth it IMO. The Aqualine 10K is actually a true 13K bulb, so it'll give you the crisp white with blue tint also.

Yeah, I am looking for WHITE, not blue nor yellow. So thats what you say the Ushio looks like?

I am interested in having 10K PAR with the look of a 13k, what about the Aqualine, isn't that also called BLV in the states, I remember one has two names.

Yeah I have it bookmarked, but since he doesn't refer to the actual "color" perception rather than raw data,its not really a valid resource for me at this time. Thats were you guys come in!!

I am wanting to switch for aesthetic reasons, but don't want too loose a bunch of PAR. In addition I often find he is missing newer brands or models and sometimes uses other than an M80 ballasts, so its kinda like comparing apples to oranges. If I do find a bulb that I am interested in I am and he has it with the correct ballast info, I will definitly check it out because some of the bulbs when you get higher in K, drop off fast in the PAR. Which means I might as well have had stayed with the 150's I had.


Definitaly interested in the Aqualines 10K though, has anyone used them?

Side note: Sanjay does not list what his definitions of cct and ppfd and EXACTLY how to read his graphs. If you give me data, I can make it look and read how you want it and it bothers me he does not clearly define those definitions. He is a professor, he should know better!!

If ony you would read the articles you would have found the definitions in the very first article I ever wrote on these lamp test. Furthermore, if you cared to look there is whole series of articles in reefkeeping.com that defines these terms and more.

Like any good professor, I would prefer people do thier homework

That was my point, why hunt for them? I would have expected to find them in plain view.

My exact statement refed to that I was looking for opinions, not hard data as of yet.

I am currently in my Senior year in Mechanical Engineering at Sacramento State in CA. I have been whipped and beaten to death by professors that if ANY definitions are used they are to be referenced. I feel that I am competent in my ability to read the data, and had read the instructions on the main page that is wan't there. I suppose that I am assuming if I would have a problem with it that anyone would. And besides, I do enough homework as it is Picture what taking an Art History class does to a ME student during the summer and ask yourself "Isn't he suffering enough?" But I suppose where I went wrong is I "assumed".

But I hope you understood using graphs so much yourself, that they can be misinterpreted VERY easily and can show what you want by moving the axis or scale.

In no way am I trying to downplay your work, I find it very valuable and an assest to our hobby. My only wish is that there was a program simillar to yours near us.

Forgive the lowly words of an undergraduate I beg of you!!!
