250W bulb in a 1000W ballast?

Stupid question I know...Can I run a lower watt bulb in a higher watt ballast? I have a PFO metal halide ballast 1000W but I obviously don't need that high of wattage for my 65 gallon tank. Does anyone know if I can use a 250 watt bulb? Will it just not be as bright etc?

what you will do is overdrive it by 750W.... so BOOM, waste of a $70+ bulb. (might not actualy blow up but will kill the bulb.)

buy one of these (selectable watt 250 - 400)

or look for a used ballast.
