270 Gallon Rimless Peninsula Tank Miracles with fish room

Great looking tank and setup! Love the aquascaping!

What did you use to finish the floor in the sump room? It looks really nice! Also, what kind of union ball valves are you using off your return pump? Are you happy with them?

Thank you. The floor i bought Allure garage floor planking from home depot they are like 12" wide by 3 foot i think, laid down easy. Ball valves are from BRS cpex valves they work awesome i did allot of searching around for the best prices on valves but a valve IMHO should never be a cheap junk one because that is the most important part of the plumbing and maintenance.

Kevin, can you tell us how you have your drain set up?

My drain is just basically just a bean overflow concept. The center pipe is a full siphon. I have one pipe to just do a trickle overflow which acts as like a balance for the system so when i plump in reactors on the return line and the flow fluctuates that keeps the over flow box at a constant height and then i just have a full siphon stand pipe ready for any emergency blockages.

Help??

Help??

Okay guys just wiped some salt creep off the top of my rim nothing out of the ordinary and I always use microfiber cloth after wipeing the salt creep off this is what I found what the hell happened or caused this im ****ed and upset. I no for a fact that was not there last week or ever :uhoh3:.

looks like the salt etched the glass how could this even be possible?

Isn't it more likely that your tank builder used some sort of paint on the exposed edges?

Dave.M

after looking and looking at it I figured it out it was just some kind of dry mineral build up now I feel like a complete idiot. Haha so glad that's all it was scrubbed it off with alcohol and a plastic scraper was not easy to get off how strange tropic marine pro salt. False alarm its been a long day at work today :hammer: im really not that dumb

Vacuuming sand bed

Vacuuming sand bed

So from the start of this tank i had it in the back of my mind that i was going to vacuum/siphon the sand bed. I found a bought a siphon made by gravel vac that was 24 inches long which is perfect for my needs. The tank has been up and running for about 6 mounts and i started to gown this brown like mat algae on the sand, i thought ahh no problem ill get out my siphon and suck it right up. well this ended up in disaster the siphon would not even suck up the brown algae like it was to heavy or i had no vacuum. Has anyone else experienced this and have any tips for me or how the hell do i vacuum my sand?:crazy1:

What sort of clean-up crew are you using?

Dave.M

I really don't have a clean up crew if you consider 5 red legged hermit crabs that i had for 4 years :lmao:. I never had much luck with keeping snails alive with the hermit crabs i defiantly want to add some sort of cuc. Im open to suggestions?

Today on my day off i got to spend some much needed time with my tank. Anyone ever get the feeling your to busy to even no whats going on with the tank besides feeding, top off and filter sock changes. Cleaned every inch of glass! Rearranged the sand to its correct spot!! Heres some pics!

Looks great Kevin! What kind of strainers do you have on the inlets for your closed loops? Hows the suction....any fish getting stuck?

Thank you! I am useing a black grate screen from http://flexpvc.com/cart/agora.cgi
Scroll all the way down the page it's called large gate screen. Suction is strong never lost a fish did lose a turbo snail. Climbed on the grate and it De shelled the snail. The shell did not get paste tho!

Looking for advice on lighting?

Looking for advice on lighting?

I have pretty much decided that i do not want to do LED lighting. Ive been using a 16k razor fixture for 2 years and never had any luck with coral growing. This is probably due to the fact that i never got a hang of the whole dimming schedule and how long to run the LED. Im going back to basics. Currently i rigged up my old 4 foot 150W metal halide lighting with two T5. My bulb choices are 14k Phoenix and blue plus ATI. I no 150W is not enough light for a 24 inch deep tank but i only have a few soft coral. My Question, if i went with a fixture of 3 250W MH with 4 80W T5 would that be too much light to just do a LPS softie tank? Or my other scenario I'm thinking is to to just go with an ATI 8x80W 60" fixture.
What are your thoughts?

Tank dimensions 72x36x24

Kevin, I think the tank looks great with 150w mh's and not sure why you think they wouldn't be enough especially if you are just planning on mostly softies. I would look at buying the pendants that I have....Hamilton Cozumel Sun Pendant. They have a coverage of 30x30 and 2 would be perfect for your tank. You can run 150w or 250w if you want to but I think the 150w would be plenty especially if you are going to add 4 x 80w t5's. My last tank was 72x36x28 and the last light fixture I had on the tank was a 6x80 and that was plenty of light.

I pretty much think I over complicate everything, I like the look of t5 the best and I could just get the 60 sun power but them I think like I should be getting the power module with the LEDs but that's like a 2000 dollar difference and I don't think I even need LEDs to many decisions in equipment for lighting these days. I did check out the the pendants and I was kinda looking for an all in one fixture like the giesmen infinity but that's pretty expensive. Do you feel an 8 bulb t5 is to much for my tank?
