270 Gallon Rimless Peninsula Tank Miracles with fish room

I think we all over complicate things in this hobby at some point. I spent really big money on a pacific sun led/t5 fixture when I started the last tank. After struggling with it for almost a year I switched to all t5's. My lps looked horrible under it and as soon as I put the t5 unit on the tank everything began to pelt up. If you are only doing lps I think the 6 bulb will be plenty for you.

I'm defiantly just gonna buy an Ati sun power then. Yea I will miss the shimmer but it's better then spending 2000 for a shimmer effect lol. Do you have a favorite bulb combination for ati bulbs?

After watching the video, my first thought was that the water level was too high. You are unable to get a lot of surface agitation due to the high water level.

If it were me, I would dial back the return pump, flow through the sump should be slow, and dial up the CL or add some wave makers to the back wall where the returns are.

I struggled with my tank for years, adding more in-tank flow changed everything.

I have played with the water level and flow quite a bit in this tank, I really don't feel like i am pushing to much water threw the sump. IMO the weir should of been lower in this tank and allowed me to have more space but i didn't specify any of those details so that's pretty much my fault. the only thing i can do to lower the water level is to remove the weir teeth because they are causing allot of restriction. every time i would cause allot of surface agitation i would get pockets of film on the surface that would never go away. To fix this i basically set up my returns in a whirlpool fashion causing a circular flow on the top of the tank. I will post another video that does show surface agitation from the closed loop. My closed loop pumps are dialed down if i go up any more the crushed coral blows around and looks like way to much for softies and LPS

Nice build.....choosing lighting for tanks always seems to be a pita! LOL

I like nassarius snails for stirring up sand beds.

Looking forward to seeing your project progress.

Any chance we can get pics of your bean overflow setup now? I think your previous pics don't show any standpipes...

Love the build!

New skimmer

New skimmer

well all that's really new is i got a new skimmer ASM G4xx and a pink and green frog spawn which is doing good. Also i am battling which seams to be diatoms on my sand and rock which is pretty thick mat like brown algae. Both phosphates and nitrate read zero on salifert test. I just started running phosgaurd a week ago to try and help with algae also running my lights 6 hours a day. Is it normal to still see this kind of algae 9 months later in a large tank. I also did start with all macro base rock no live rock which i didn't cycle with salt water for weeks before i used the rock? yes i use rodi water 0 tds run threw 2 di canisters :), tropic marine pro salt, also run carbon and feed lightly. I didn't have any cyano or GHA yet!!!

Super clean setup, really nice. You have some superior plumbing skills. Are you sure you need the barracuda for your return pump? There are a few quieter and more energy efficient options out there. Not sure about changing them out for the closed loop because I have never had one. I use the same pump you do but I am coming up from my basement with 9 to 10 feet of head pressure and I still have it valved down a bit so my water level doesn't get too high in the tank. I know they are very loud, I don't mind it too much since it's in my basement.

Thank you, yea I may have designed my plumbing and return pump way to big that's what happens when it's ur first big tank i bet i could run a 600 gallon display for what it's plumbed for lol. I have the lower flow impeller and still have it valved back I plan on running 2 media reactors yet off the pump so I should be okay but Yea I plan on eventually switching that pump out for a dolphin eventually.

Need help with green algae?

Need help with green algae?

I am running into this green algae on my sand and rocks, anyone have a clue to whats going on. My nitrate and phosphates are reading zero my lights are only about 4 months old ati blue plus and 150w 14k MH. MH are on for 6 hours a day and t5 for 10hrs. i only have 10 fish and feed lightly, some frozen mysis i strain all the juice out off and new life spectrum pellets.

I actually really don't have clean up crew. i have 6 red legged hermits that are big and knock everything over that's why i wasn't sure what i wanted to do for a clean up crew or what to add and with being rimless with the snails. what do you recommend?

Since you don't have a substrate you won't need nassarius snails but a few wouldn't hurt as they are meat eaters as well as detrivours and will clean up fish waste and any stray food. Some Mexican turbo snails for bad hair algae, else just nerites or astreas will do fine. I have no use for cerith snails. I don't recommend hermit crabs for the damage they can cause, although they are pretty fascinating to watch. If you get bubble algae then some emerald crabs, otherwise let the tangs clean up the rocks. And a couple of conchs for the bottom.

i just added some red strip trochus snails to my tank and they have done an amazing job at eating all of the algae in their path.
